Members wloczykij Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 OK, my background was mostly piano when I was a kid, but about 12 years ago I picked up a guitar and played for a couple of years. Then I moved couple times, never really had the time to get serious about it and even though I played a few chords to a few songs it was just a few simple chords. I can read music pretty well and tab (well... there is no magic to the latter). In any case, my problem is speed and style. If I had the patience I'd play scales but that's boring (at least to me). Diving head first into songs though somehow is not working for me (I can pick my way through tunes like "people are strange" but then again that is a simple one). So what excercises/things to practice would you guys recommend? Should I just grim and bear and sit down to the scales? Oh yeah, music I like/enjoy is classic rock, blues, some folk and old country (Rio Bravo rocks ). Thanks

But to be a player you need to play songs. So, it's sounds like you've kind of answered your own question really. The structure will be make you play better with more precision, dexterity, etc... but the songs will keep you playing music as a whole. One wthout the other has never really been the answer for most folks, some maybe, but not most.

Ok.. maybe 30 minutes of scales after a beer or two to loosen up the fingers
