Members Wizard7 Posted April 27, 2006 Members Posted April 27, 2006 i was doing some long stretches, and it really hurts in my wrist near my thumb and up to my thumb. when i was doing some 5 and 6 string sweeps, i keep my thumb up on the top of the fretboard. is that the cause of it? i feel it stretches the ligament between my index and thumb too much. anything i should do to make the pain subside or prevent it in the future?
Poparad Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Well, first off you should be keeping your thumb on the backside of the neck, opposite of your 1st or 2nd fingers (index and middle). The only time you'd put your thumb over the top of the neck is when you're fretting something on the 6th string, or when doing blues-style bending of strings (it provides better leverage).
Members 1001gear Posted April 27, 2006 Members Posted April 27, 2006 The best thing I've found for muscle related pain is capsaicin. It comes in a variety of off the shelf creams and is available OTC. It's very strong (one sparse application lasts up to 24 hours) so you need to be careful applying it and follow washing instructions explicitly. The danger of course is further aggravating the injury. Ask the pharmacist.

Make sure that you aren't pressing down too hard on the neck with your thumb when you play, and take breaks frequently. As far as something for the pain, alleve is pretty good if the problem isn't too severe.
