aside from scouring free tabs from the internet on a song-by-song basis (which i do NOT want to waste my time doing), is there such a book? ok, maybe not a thousand, but at least a good solid thick collection of classic rock / metal / blues / etc riffs that nearly every guitar dude / dudette (i'm the former) should know?

you know, Sultans Of Swing, Crazy Train, Sweet Home Alabama, Stairway To Getting Kicked Out Of The Music Store, etc.

one book. tons of riffs-n-licks from a wide range of artists.

Depends on the region but not usually until the second or third time.
I think the rule is twice on the same guitar on separate
occasions or not having purchased either of two guitars
used in said manner regardless of chronology.

Wolf Marshall has a book called 101 must know rock licks. It sounds like exactly what you're describing - about two or three bars of various songs Wolf apparently likes. I think all the tabs are wrong though, probably copyright issues.

hmm, that would be alright. as long as the basic melody / riff is there, at least it's something to work from when i noodle or play w/ friends.
