Si i'm teaching myself CAGED theory using this book because it was recomended over the Fret Board logic books by several guitar teachers i've asked. It seems to be a good and quick way to move all around the neck and play in any key with these chords...but it seems as if though the CAGED theory isnt as good for solos as just learning the sacles across the neck and using them in any key....or is it a more powerful tool than i believe it to be? Just wanna make sure because I dont wanna waste my time. If it helps, im interested in blues rock lead guitar and jam band type playing.

Hi, while I don't have that book, it seems you may not be understanding CAGED clearly - those scale across the neck (like those pentatonic and major scale shapes everyone learns) are CAGED shapes. For example, the 5 pentatonic shapes correspond to each of the CAGED positions - what is commonly called shape #1 (fingering from low to high 1-4 1-3 1-3 1-3 1-4 1-4) sits in the E-position.

Anyway, judging from the table of contents on Amazon, that book looks better than Fretboard Logic (which I think is really pretty bad), but IMHO you'd be best served by PlaneTalk, and I'd recommend the book and DVD together. It's essentially a much more efficient and easy to implement version of CAGED, with a focus on learning your intervals in order to play melodically, even over difficult chord progressions.

Well. i did just get into it about two weeks ago and Im also starting lessons so im sure alot of the theory will start to be filled in. My main goal is to be able to be become both a rythm and lead guitarist at the same time (Hendrix, Keith Richards..). I like the whole idea of being able to swtich around between chords and riffs during the song at any given time. Also, i want to be able to improvise. I would love to be able to just sit with any musician and jam with them.

Work your way through Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene and you will be able to just sit with any musician and jam.

Whats weird to me about CAGED theory is that the book has scales on only 3 strings...i always learned pentatonics were on all 6 strings? Should i be adding the extra notes myself or should I just use those notes when using riffs centered around the patterns?
