Members red|dragon Posted October 19, 2006 Members Posted October 19, 2006 Just got Tal Farlow's rereleased video dvd from hotlicks. $26, what a rip. his teaching ability is no where his playing ability. he's old, but come on, give this guy a script or something. just him talking about the old days blah blah and then they just put in some documentary footage. his playing is really sloppy as well. dialog. wtf...
Members gennation Posted October 19, 2006 Members Posted October 19, 2006 Yep, I have that one. There's not a whole lot of teaching going on there. That diminished/dominant stuff he teaches is pretty useful...by the way, he doesn't understand very much stuff about guitar and music...he's JUST a monster. His lessons are like..."i put my hand here a lot, and then I do this a lot too, etc..." Mofo could play like no other though.
Members bardsley Posted October 20, 2006 Members Posted October 20, 2006 Sometimes I think it's useful to see the masters talk about music in that way. It can remind you not to take it too seriously. I went to a workshop with Scofield last year, and his response when asked about the way he approached chromatics was something like "yeah, it's really just that thing where you play the shape one fret away". Edit: too to too

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with learning as much as you can, just don't let it dominate your playing. Music shouldn't be like painting by numbers.
Members astring Posted October 20, 2006 Members Posted October 20, 2006 I saw it but I do not own it. That playing with Lenny was ok but the teaching is weak. I have been listening to The Swinging Guitar album lately (no drummer!) and loving it. He seemed to love those flat 5's
Members gennation Posted October 20, 2006 Members Posted October 20, 2006 Here's some of the classic Tal: http://www.leantop.com/artist.php?artist=4661774 I wish they had the Red Norvo Trio One of the best trio's to date. Anyways, enjoy!
Members Virgman Posted October 20, 2006 Members Posted October 20, 2006 http://youtube.com/results?search_query=tal+farlow There are some nice Tal Farlow videos on Youtube. Beautiful!
Members Triton Posted October 21, 2006 Members Posted October 21, 2006 Try to see things from his side.He gets asked to do a video and gets paid for it.Why should he say no?It is also hard to tell when you're in the middle of something if it's good or bad.Maybe he thought he did a good video. He probably enjoyed it and for a fan of his music it is always interesting to watch.I haven't watched that video in ages so I don't remember it very well. Anyone who buys a video from a famous player and expect some good guitar lessons is stupid. Being a good guitar player and famous isn't the same thing as being a good teacher. Very few famous players are good teachers. As for playing sloppy I don't care.My ears like sloppy playing. It's just my taste.

Members paulstanley Posted October 25, 2006 Members Posted October 25, 2006 There's a cool movie out on DVD called Talmage Farlow. It's an old movie that's now been re-released. It shows Tal, now passed on, living in Jersey, playing guitar, painting signs. It's a nice movie. Some good footage too of Tal playing. I don't think sloppy is a word I would use to describe his playing. Also some good footage of him playing at Lenny Breau's house. Some great playing on that jam session.
Members red|dragon Posted October 26, 2006 Author Members Posted October 26, 2006 his playing in the video was sloppy, not his playing in general.
