so im a jazz guitar major, and my teacher is very set on me using strict alternate picking.

in general, on most all of my runs, i use alterante picking. i dont really think about it, it just comes naturally... but... there are times when i will do two upstrokes... and to me of course, i think it sounds fine, but he makes me stop and start over, everytime i mess up.

ive already been playing for 12 years and ive gotten very comfortable with my picking style. and now its just weird cause i gotta make this change.

i know that in the end, i will benefit from strict alternate picking. but how do i unlearn something, that i dont even realize im doing!!!! its so frustrating!!! jesus!

why cant i play the guitar the way i play guitar!!!? i still sound great! hah

anyone gone through the same thing?

{censored} him. school standards.

go watch Jimmy Bruno's DVD - No Nonsense Jazz Guitar.

Just be aware of your picking. Be able to change it. Be able to control your picking. Don't get stuck in playing the same way all the time. Because the attack and whether you are doing an upstroke or down will have an impact on the sound and rhythm.

You want it to be "Boom-Be-Dap-BAH ticka- Pah-Do bop"

Not "Deebeedeebeedeebeedeebeedeebee"

Listen to Wes and study him. Study him very hard. Get the Jamey Abersold catelog and get the book called Wes Montgomery Folio.

And if you already think you sound great, post a clip of your playing so we can critique.

ill post something a little bit later.

when i say i sound great, i dont mean, wow im amazing. (which i am, hah) but my picking does not affect my attack. i LIKE the way i pick. i just havent encountered picking problems yet, since 97% of the time, im alternate picking anyways. its just one or two notes... WHO GIVES A {censored}!? ya know?

I've been working my strict alternate picking because it's a new technique to me and I like the challenge but really, what IS the deal with exclusive alternate picking anyway?

I always favored strict alternate picking for scalular stuff and saved the sweep typemoves for arps and anything 3 strings or greater 'one note per string'-typical sweep arp moves.

An old friend of mine I met up with again a few years ago had become a really great economy picker-he was kind of a neo classical/fusion player back in the day but is a jazzer now. And this got me interested in economy picking again. I never really dug the mechanics of economy picking before

I say work and develop both.

I still favor Strict alt for most things I do....but the more I develop my economy picking the more its helped my alternate picking. I think they can work together. And the more natural you get with them you can seemlessly move from one technique to the other as needed.

I also think for most people, that it's better to develop good aternate picking first and then work in the economy picking(your already an experienced player). With I usually hold off and get them to develop alternat picking and even sweep picking for their arps first. Because good alternate picking is a component of economy picking and economy picking wont work for all your lines usually.....unless your Frank Gambale:cool:
