Members IcyScythe Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 I'm trying to figure out the best possible way to hold a pick... what is it? I'm confused as to whether I should hold it so that my thumb is at a right angle or if I should stretch it out more... could somebody post some picks of how they hold it (if they know what they're talking about that is)
Members nylon rock Posted November 5, 2006 Members Posted November 5, 2006 It's different for everyone.Just focus on what gives you control. Do you hold it on a short leash so that little is extending and you can pop notes at will, or would you prefer a cleaner tone by having it extend further so that your playing always involves just pick on strings. The right angle to thumb and index may make you think that that is all you need to do, but the truth is, the pick is always trying to rotate within your grasp. You could start a song picking with the "tip" and end up at the end of the song picking with the "butt." So hold the pick so that it doesn't get away from you. There is nothing worse than the terrible feeling of having the pick perfectly within your grasp, everything is going fine, and then one mis-strum and suddenly the pick is at the brink of your control. You try to rotate it back as you continue playing, but all the while you know it will be a miracle to reign it in, and then the dreaded moment comes, and there goes your pick flying out into space, or worse yet, right into the soundhole.
Members Dubb Posted November 6, 2006 Members Posted November 6, 2006 What are your opinions on anchoring the pinky of your picking hand on the guitar? How about on bracing your wrist on the bridge? I do both, but I heard it's bad to anchor your pinky so I'm trying to do that less.
Members rm100tubehead Posted November 6, 2006 Members Posted November 6, 2006 The best place to anchor your hand is is on the strings lower from the string your playing. This doesnt work for all situations but it offers great muting and increased acuracy. has anyone seen marty friedman pick? hes awsome but what the hell is he doing with his pick hand?
