How to nail being a trad musician?

I know the question is a 'bit' absurd.. But any thoughts would be of great help!

I'm dreaming of leading a contemporary sounding acoustic irish trad group, and I'm still on a very beginning level of musicianship.

I'm currently practicing songs and tunes and a bit of ear training (solfege and transcribing). Also my favorite groups at the time are ones like Dervish, Nickel Creek, Altan, Planxty etc.

My main interests are:

-becoming a good accompanist

-being a good arranger&composer/songwriter

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The one thing that has helped me with the music I like (jazz) is having a friend (mentor) who is a pro in that type of music. I play guitar and he plays paino but his input is still very helpful. Find an old timer for a mentor (not really lessons, but just to converse with about the music).

theres an Irish guy on the open jam forum called Blackpig, he's a decent sort & plays or has played trad music.

i'm sure you could send him a message.:)

Live the music. Listen to the music. Put all other music aside and surround yourself with that music.

It's the fix. I call it "learning by osmosis".

You can listen to almost any music strictly for a little over a month and it will creep into your playing. Then you can find the rest pretty easy.

Listen to it on your way to work/school, listen to on your breaks, listen to on your way home, listen to it while you're typing questions on forums...listen to it.

Listen, listen, listen.

Thank you very much for the advice, it all seems very sensible..

Don't know about the dancing though - is that what the whiskey is needed for? ;)
