I thought about changing where the note was but it ended up sounding realling crappy and losing the rythm so i think im just going to torture my fingers until the can stretch the distance

Any excercises you can recomend. im alredy doing the one john petrucci shows on rock discipline.

I've heard Frank Gambale say he just slides his hand down and doesn't try to screw his hands up by being a contortionist.

Or you could

Adjust the guitar strap* to raise the guitar neck UP, so that the guitar is more vertical than usually.

On the higher frets, it makes a HUGE difference.

Try.

edit* I don't mean to lengthen/shorten the strap. Just slide/tilt the whole guitar+strap so that the body is lower and the neck is upper than normal (in a "classical guitar position" fashion)

Thanks for the replies guys. Im practicing it sitting so strap is a non issue. I dont want to change the way its play because that will probably ruin the feel of the song. FYI i dont have short fingers (long thin but not as long as PG). I'm playing on a 25.5" neckscale so that might be an extra annoyance hah. You guys got any stretching excercises you do?

Hey, I've got hands almost as small as my girlfriend's, and I have no problems in stretching from 4th fret to 9th. I tried from 3rd to 9th and I can almost do that as well (very barely).

The strap thing which I mentioned is not really about the strap, forget about the strap, my bad!

Try this if you practice sitting: instead of keeping the guitar on your right leg, keep it rested between your legs. Because the whole guitar shifts to the left, raise the neck up. Probably the guitar neck is at 45 degrees or more now (while normally it's almost perpendicular to your body).

See if it makes any difference (at higher frets it makes a huge difference! but i don't know at low frets). I realized this trick a long time ago from the Shawn Lane instructional videos.
