Members rockitsauce Posted February 28, 2007 Members Posted February 28, 2007 I am wanting to try to get away from the all-downpick technique that I did forever (chugging with thrash stuff, ie. metallica, slayer etc.) and am wanting to try and get some more control and rhythmic timing with the same stuff but with alternate picking. I had it down fairly good with all downstrokes (w/ palm mutes) but I noticed that I hit a wall and it seemed there was a point that I couldnt go any farther and so I determined that with more controlled alternate picking that I could break that barrier (really evident while attempting 'holy wars' with that fast chugging). One of the problems I see is the action of the string seems harder to control at high speeds with the back and forth motion more so than heavily leaning on it with palm and all downstrokes. This may be a confusing question and it may be that what I am asking wouldnt be worth it as I understand that downstrokes makes for that textbook tone. I dunno, any advice by anyone who has thought about this before, I would appreciate it.
Members Mackin Posted March 3, 2007 Members Posted March 3, 2007 String gauge makes a difference. I switched from .8-.42 to .10-.46 (Regular) and it made a difference. The strings are fatter and therefore more difficult to bend. I'm still not able to make it sound good at high speeds, but it's coming ! (practice !)
Members Stazinish Posted March 4, 2007 Members Posted March 4, 2007 Listen to the song What I've Become. I got that down with down picking but I've been trying to clean it up with alternate picking. I think it's starting to pay off a little.
