Chitlins Con Carne is a fun tune for rock players to build improv skills.

Any 12-bar or 16-bar blues will do it.

Maybe you could learn the changes to "I've Got Rhythm"? Time-tested chord progression for improving improv. Learn the basic ones first, then move on to the variations.

Start here-- http://people.uncw.edu/russellr/rhythm.html

If that seems too much, just mess around with the B section. It's a blast playing over those chords.

It may be a bit challenging at first, but hang in there.

#1 One-Chord Vamp. Pick any chord and just vamp on that one chord. Write a bassline for it.

#2 Two-Chord Vamp

-a Pick 2 chords in the same key: ex: Amin to Bmin in the key of G major

-b Pick 2 chords in different keys: ex: Gmin to C#minor

#3 1 6 2 5 1 Vamp Like in the song "All of Me"

#4 Blues Blues

#5 Jazz Blues

#6 Typical chord progression: Emin Dmaj Cmaj B7

All of those you can practice improving over. Check out Scott Henderson's 2 instructional videos to see what your options are for the chords you're going to be playing over.

Record something and post it. We'll tell ya how ya did. :cool:

These are the current ones I'm working on...

a couple 2-chord vamps:

||: Dm7 | Dm7 | Dm7 | Bbm6 :||

I play around in D Nat Min for Dm7, and then Bb Jazz Minor for Bbm6. Works great. Reminds me of a Stan Kenton tune.

||: Dmaj9 | Dmaj9 | G13sus11 | G13sus11 :||

This one is pretty much the D Major scale for Dmaj9 and then the D Dorian/C Major scale for the G13sus11 chord. This is a great Major to Minor workout.

More chords...this sounds like some song, but can't put a name to it...(it has some very common moves/progressions in it, could sound like a few things)

||: Dmaj9 | Dmaj9 | Am9 | Am9 | Gmaj7 | Gmaj7 | Gm7 | Gm6 | Dmaj7 | Bm7 | Em7 | A7 | Dmaj7 | Em7 | A7 :||

That one has some nice Key changes throughout and kind of has a double turnaround at the end (vi-ii-V-I then a ii-V-I).

In a nutshell...

Dmaj7 = D Major scale

Am9 = A Dorian

Gmaj7 = G Major scale

Gm7 = G Dorian

Gm6 = G Dorian, G Jazz Min, or D Jazz Min (i think those are right)

Then D Major for the rest with the Bb Jazz Min for the A7's if you want.
