Members Gustaff Posted April 22, 2007 Members Posted April 22, 2007 Hey all! I'm interrested what are your opinions about this two colleges? which is better, Musicians Institute 1 year certificate program or Los Angeles Music Academy 1 year program? and what are they teaching you? I have some knowledge in jazz, but I need to study advanced stuff like outside playing, playing over fast changes, bebop guitar, using not traditional scales, intervals etc. will that places give me that knowledge?
Members UnderTheGroove Posted April 23, 2007 Members Posted April 23, 2007 You can get that knowledge at both places. I'm a graduate of MI and thought it was a great experience. I would suggest you visit both and decide which is the best fit for you.
Members Gustaff Posted April 23, 2007 Author Members Posted April 23, 2007 unfortunately, I can't visit them before, because I'm international student. what degree you have from MI? I have not enough money to study at bachelor's degree. is certificate program good enough?

I'm a full time musician (gigs/sessions/lessons/Jam Tracks), so I guess it has worked out for me.
Members Gustaff Posted April 24, 2007 Author Members Posted April 24, 2007 did you start from the basics or you could choose what to study? I have completed 4 year program in my country, so I have intermediate knowledge. I want to go somewhere to study most advanced aspects of jazz. I don't want to study notation basics and basic stuff again, that's the problem. I have to choose right place for me... and does certificate mean something? can you find job with that certificate?
Members UnderTheGroove Posted April 24, 2007 Members Posted April 24, 2007 No, you don't have to start with the basics. At MI they have you meet with an instructor to evaluate you skills/knowledge level before you start classes. This helps you get placed at the appropriate level. The certificate doesn't mean anything and probably won't help you with a job. For that matter, a music degree (the actual piece of paper) won't help with a lot of music jobs either. The main area that these will help is if you want to get into teaching. Where I teach lessons, they only hire instructors with degrees or certificates. For most cases (gigs/session work, etc), all that matters is that you can play the guitar how they want you to play the guitar. The certificate or degree justs helps prepare you to do that.

Members rickemo Posted February 10, 2011 Members Posted February 10, 2011 Hey Gustaff, So I wondered what did you do in the end? I'm in pretty much the same position as you were. Can't visit them ( I'm in France ), they both have their +/- not sure which one is actually the best. Did you go to either of them in the end ? Thank you for letting me know !
