Members Sauntman Posted May 13, 2007 Members Posted May 13, 2007 I have learned the 5 patterns of the minor pentatonic scale and have been practicing them while attempting to jam along with some blues backing tracks in various keys. I would assume my next step would be to learn the "blue notes" so I can get the blues scales down. What about after that? What scales should I learn next? I am mainly interested in classic rock and blues, but I eventually want to learn neo-classical metal styles (Randy Rhoads style for example). Someone point me in the right direction. I should add, I have never taken any lessons. Thanks in advance:
Members Dubb Posted May 13, 2007 Members Posted May 13, 2007 The major scale. Trust me on this one. Then major pentatonic. This won't take long at all because it's just the major scale minus 2 notes. Then the modes of the major scale. You'll eventually want to learn them all, but you'll want to start off with Aeolian (natural minor), Dorian, and Mixolydian. Locrian is optional, however . Also, gennation has a really good series of lessons covering this sort of thing here: Advanced Pentatonic Tutorial But you'll gain much more from the above lesson if you first check out his "Beginner to Advanced" series at the top of his main lesson page, here: http://lessons.mikedodge.com. That series will teach you some theory basics. I highly recommend his lessons .
Members Sauntman Posted May 13, 2007 Author Members Posted May 13, 2007 Thanks Dubb! My guess was that I should learn the major scale and then modes just as you suggested. I have a very basic understanding of modes now from what little theory I do know. I am just getting to the point where I can play the minor pentatonic scale up and down the neck, so I figured I should start learning a new scale. Also, I do understand that I need to make music using the scales and not simply playing in set patterns. I am getting better at this. I will also check out Gennation's website as you suggested.
