Members sxyryan Posted May 10, 2007 Members Posted May 10, 2007 And not how to do them. I can even pull off pinch harmonics pretty well, i was just curious what a harmonic is exactly. I have heard people talking about the regular harmonics (just touching the string at the 5th fret for example) and that they are the natural vibration of the string. Ok so i kind of get that but what about pinch harmonics? Im just the type of person who is curious about how things work, and the harmonics have confused me for a while so any help would be cool, thanks a bunch.

Members sxyryan Posted May 10, 2007 Author Members Posted May 10, 2007 that was mildly confusing but i think i get the general idea, thanks a bunch
Members 1001gear Posted May 10, 2007 Members Posted May 10, 2007 Yeah basically a string vibrates at all those divisions out to infinity I suppose; giving you all the overtones. The playable harmonics are the zero crossings - called nodes. Touching the string at these points kills most of the overtones and the fundamental. The harmonic, because it's not vibrating at the node, instead, rings out. Pinch harmonics work the same way but since the technique puts energy into the string, a vibration the length of the pinch, as well as any coincidental harmonics are left to race up and down the fretted note. I think.
