good songs to learn

I want to improve my playing skills. Right now I am working on 'Cowboys from Hell' by pantera.

What are some good songs for me to learn after this that will help me work on my technical abilities/give me a good fretboard workout...

Eugune's Trickbag (aka Paganini's 5th Caprice - Steve Vai plays it in the movie crossroads). Covers the whole fretboard and is a great chop builder. A year after I learnt it I still keep coming back to it every couple of weeks, trying to play it faster/better etc.

Flight of the Bumblebee is also a great alternate picking workout.

I like using "Satch Boogie" by Satriani and "Black Star" by Yngwie Malmsteen fro stuff like this with my students....not as hard as they seem if you have the official published tab/sheetmusic and take it slow with a metronome....I'll also have the students use something like Winamp with a slow down plugin to slow the original track down to a realistic "student playing speed".......

Black Star? Wake up. Too tough for a beginner

Actually, I take the head of the song (main theme, I guess), slow it down in winamp and work through it bit by bit...we also run it with just a metronome....no solos, no intro....I'm not worried about a student playing like Yngwie, I'm trying to give them something to work on that incorporates long scalar passages....and no, most of these students aren't stone cold beginners, they are students who can already play rhythm guitar in time but are just learning to play lead guitar in time....Eugune's Trickbag? Pantera Songs? they aren't for beginners, either....

actually, except for really really fast 3note per string runs in the solo I can play cowboys from hell just fine.

I have been playing a year. I don't know if that makes me a beginner or not.

Songs that have improved my guitar playing skills:

1. Dream Theater: The Glass Prison

2. John Petrucci: Damage Control

3. Annihilator: Imperiled Eyes

4. Megadeth: Holy Wars and Hanger 18

There are many more...but these will certainly be beneficial
