Members nautaflcl Posted July 23, 2007 Members Posted July 23, 2007 Ok, So I was just curious, aside from listening to it on my own, and analyzing it, what kind of theory, such as modes/scales/keys/whatever do bands like Necrophagist use, Technical Death Metal. I know you can do lots of things, but give me a better clearer idea if you can, I just want to be sure I'm right.
Members blumonk Posted July 23, 2007 Members Posted July 23, 2007 With metal you need to familiarize yourself with minor scales. Natural Minor, Harmonic minor and Phyrgian Dominant. Muhammad also uses fast diminished arpeggios. As for the solos, minor arpeggios, diminished arpeggios and more minor scales. Is there a particular song that you would like analyzed? Also check out their tab book that you can buy off their website and in concert. It will help you a lot. With metal and death metal, it's all about the half step and minor scales and modes. What song do you like?
Members nautaflcl Posted July 23, 2007 Author Members Posted July 23, 2007 Thanks alot. I really like their song Only Ash Remains, I love the intro.Well there's no particular song that I want analyzed. Just in general how they get their dark evil sound, which I know the dimished scale is good for, but I was thinking they probably use other scales and mode changes and such. And see, this other band, which is a tad different, is also tech death, and they sound different, of course, they seem to change what their playing alot. Check out their songs Lactating is only fun..., and Deepthroat isn't a m.... Here's the link: http://myspace.com/tbwdAlso tell me what you think of them. :]Thanks alot for the help, I've been looking for some people with knowledge in this area for a while. I've just kind of been trying to figure it out myself, but help is better. :>

Members nautaflcl Posted July 24, 2007 Author Members Posted July 24, 2007 thanks, I'm glad to have joined, this place looks very helpful.Hah, so can anyone help me out?
Members mikepl12 Posted July 25, 2007 Members Posted July 25, 2007 I think in the far end it all comes down to what You hear in Your head. If Mr. Muhammed doesn't write down what he has in his head (I don't know if he does), the music he produces isn't 'his'. That might be considered a study or whatever... scales are just meant to help, if I recall. Michael PS. You'll be better asking questions about death metal here: http://www.riversofgore.com/pit/index.php. These people are crazy, but some of them know their things about playing metal.
Members nautaflcl Posted August 2, 2007 Author Members Posted August 2, 2007 Ok, so I've been messing around with Blumonk's advice, and it was good, and I appreciate the help. And I actually visited that site, and um, one of the replies to my question was that there isn't theory involved in metal, mostly. That didn't help, haha. So my last request, which I would ask of Blumonk, and thank for offering to help, is help me analyze the song by Necrophagist theory wise, Diminished to Be, which is a great song. I'll be back later, thanks a lot, I'll look forward to the reply. :]
Members blueEbola Posted August 2, 2007 Members Posted August 2, 2007 The dark evil sound comes mostly from diminished chords, a tritone (which is half a diminished chord, really). blumonk gave some good advice. A lot of metal bands utilize a lot of chromatic ideas interspersed with the minor scales/diminished scales, so don't be afraid to experiment with chromatics.
