Members BeerBaron Posted July 28, 2007 Members Posted July 28, 2007 I have a learners book and I'am gettin onto the scale section, but I have been having some trouble with them like say with an E minor scale or whatever. I have more trouble starting it then coming back from it. Do I just need more practice or what? What should I do to improve this? Thanks Daniel
Members bardsley Posted July 28, 2007 Members Posted July 28, 2007 Not entirely sure what you mean. Do you find it physically hard, or do you just find it hard remembering how to play it?Whatever it is though, generally the answer is "you just need to keep practising". Good luck. It gets easier.
Members BeerBaron Posted July 28, 2007 Author Members Posted July 28, 2007 Its a little of both really. It's harder for me physicly to play, like I'm alot slower but on the "reverse" I'm alot faster then at the start and it's hard for me to remember. Like you say I guess I do just need to keep practicing.Daniel
Members rgordon83 Posted July 29, 2007 Members Posted July 29, 2007 Are you practicing with a metronome? You need to make sure that you are always practicing scales with a metronome and that you are practicing slow enough that you can hear all the notes you are playing clearly and in time. Also, make sure all your distortion and effects are off. check out this post on my blog http://theguitarresource.com/uncategorized/practicing-guitar-with-a-metronome-why-and-how-you-should-do-it/ also, if you don't have a metronome, use this http://www.metronomeonline.com/ (but you should really buy one anyways)

Do the metronome thing like they said but also be aware that you should PICK EVERY NOTE both ascending and descending. Also go slowly enough that you can consciously think - and hear the intervals instead of just mechanically going through the tabbed fret map.
Members wrathfuldeity Posted August 2, 2007 Members Posted August 2, 2007 Also, if using a pick, use alternate picking.
Members UnderTheGroove Posted August 2, 2007 Members Posted August 2, 2007 As mentioned, use a metronome and alternate pick the scale. Play as slow as necessary to play every note clearly without mistakes. With practice your speed will get faster.
Members rotren Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 Take a look at the article I recently wrote. http://www.dolphinstreet.com/blog/learning-scales-modes.php If you learn the major scale, you're set. You can then play all 7 modes, see the article for the explanation. Just practice this over and over until it sticks.
