Members AiC Cantrell Posted July 30, 2007 Members Posted July 30, 2007 Hey all, I've been playing for about 1 year now and am learning faster and faster. I have ran into trouble with the live version of Immigrant Song (the long solo). I play all the notes correct, and my timing is perfect (I play alongside the tape) but I can't seem to make it sound the same, it sounds weak. I have a great guitar and amp for Zeppelin (IMO), and was thinking it may be not being able to crank the amp, or may just be technique (I'm entirely self taught). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Here's a tab of the song (you'll need to scroll to find the solo) http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/led_zeppelin/immigrant_song_ver2_tab.htm And video (near to end) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfaRAKzcTew
Members Knottyhed Posted July 30, 2007 Members Posted July 30, 2007 Could be anything; including your amp settings - so really we'd need to see and hear you play... alot of tone is in the way you pick the string and even the type of pick you use (material it's made from/thickness etc.). Best thing to do in my opinion is just simply have the sound/feel you want in your head, and as you practice experiment with the way you pick, dig into the string (or not) use vibrato etc. etc. and just strive to get closer to the sound you're after. Playing an instrument (especially one as expressive as guitar) isn't just about playing the right notes in the right place

Members mikepl12 Posted July 30, 2007 Members Posted July 30, 2007 Hey AiC Cantrell, I don't know how fast are You learning guitar, but when I was about Your 'guitar age' I would find myself in similiar situation. Gradually, I would find some moments when I loved my guitar playing more and more over months. After about 2.5 years of playing, I still don't feel I always sound the best, but I can fire an intermediate 'improvised' lead (based on my concept) and have it sound just like I would like to (semi-professional+ level if I were to judge objectively). I think there are methods for learning 'to sound right', but You know, I never practiced vibrato and other articulations a lot (although I'm surely going to soon), and if You read above, I still like my playing a lot here and there. This forces me to judge it's not all about articulation methods. So, if somebody asked me, I'd say practice songs You like, or technique, or theory, and do what You can to make them sound as good as You can, and if You're still unsatisfied... try to identify the problem and fix it. If it's not an obvious problem, but just a 'feeling' in playing - be patient. If it comes for free with time (and I'd say it does), why concentrate on it instead of other areas that certainly need to be trained hard? Michal
Members Jarardo Posted July 30, 2007 Members Posted July 30, 2007 I listened to the solo from the youtube video, and it sounds like he's using some effects. Probably some reverb, and maybe something else to give it that echo feel, or it may just be from being outside. Keep in mind as well, you may have some nice stuff, but Jimmy Page was a world famous, very rich, very very good, touring musician. He had everything he could want to use to achieve his tone, and the money to pursue it. As far as tone goes, I try to find something I'm happy with for my own tone, and stick with that. Though I need several different tones to play the range of things I want to play. If you could put a video of yourself up, maybe someone here could better identify what you could do to achieve that tone. Aside from that, maybe do some googling to see what kind of setup Page was using at the time.
