Members Volitan Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 This chord is a {censored}ing bitch. Anyone got any easy fingerings for it?
Members bigboy_78 Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Just bar the top 3 strings at the third fret.
Members Machine Gun Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Just bar the top 3 strings at the third fret. Then third finger on 5th string 5th fret. You can embellish this by adding your pinky to the 2nd string 6th fret. 1 1--4 1 1 1-3 1 OR You can do A type bar chord and on the 10th fret and place 2nd finger 2nd string 11th fret and fourth finger on 4th string 12th fret 1 12 1 1--3 1 These are both easy movable m7 chord shapes that you can use just like regular major bar chords.
Members astring Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 e X b 3 g 3 d 3 a X e 3 this seems to be the standard, and it is pretty easy to do.
Members astring Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Just bar the top 3 strings at the third fret. top 4 strings (or you do not get the 7)
Members gennation Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 There's a TON of ways to play Gm7, maybe you should tab out what you are actually playing. Then we can give you more detailed help. The chord tabbed out with the fingering would help a lot. Also, "Gm7" in specific shouldn't be giving you troubles, it would probably be m7's in general. Here's just a few Cm7 chords from my lesson site, along with their fingerings. Is one of these these fingerings the one you're having issues with? Cm7: --3-- = 3 --4-- = 4 --3-- = 2 --x-- = --3-- = 1 --x-- --3-- = 1 --4-- = 2 --3-- = 1 --5-- = 3 --3-- = 1 --x-- --x-- --4-- = 4 --3-- = 3 --1-- = 1 --3-- = 2 --x-- --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --10- = 3 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --11- = 4 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --10- = 3 --8-- = 1 --x-- --8-- = 3 --8-- = 3 --8-- = 3 --x-- --8-- = 2 --8-- = 1 --11- = 4 --8-- = 1 --10- = 3 --x-- --x-- --11-- = 3 --11-- = 2 --12-- = 4 --10-- = 1 --x--- --x---
Members Volitan Posted August 30, 2007 Author Members Posted August 30, 2007 Okay. Am7-- Fm-- Dm e 0-- e 1-- e 1B 1-- B 1-- B 3G 0-- G 1-- G 2D 2-- D 3-- D 0A 0-- A x-- A xE x-- E x-- E x And then the Gm7
Members blumonk Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 lol Volitan, you should print out this thread and save it and then look at it again in like 10 years.Gm7 chords are a bitch!
Members Volitan Posted August 30, 2007 Author Members Posted August 30, 2007 Well this is what I got when I look on another site
Members astring Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 just mess around with b flat, f, and d, you can add the g(1) and dump the d(5) or what ever just keep the b flat(3) and and f(7). mess around with see how many you can come up with and notice how they sound.
Members Machine Gun Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Well this is what I got when I look on another site Same thing that we've mentioned. Just bar it.http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/index.php?ch=G&mm=m7&get=GetYou can click the variations to get um other variations.
Members gennation Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Well this is what I got when I look on another site That would this Cm7: --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --8-- = 1 --10- = 3 --8-- = 1 or for Gm7 you'd move it down 5 frets...and yes, at lower frets this is going to be harder to tackle... --3-- = 1 --3-- = 1 --3-- = 1 --3-- = 1 --5-- = 3 --3-- = 1 The 1st finger will barre the WHOLE 3rd fret in the gm7 chord, and your 3rd finger will play the note on the A string. You can also omit the high E string if you'd like for the time being, allowing the hand to get more comfortable over time. Then you can bring back in the high E string after while. My best suggestion is...to practice getting it more comfortable the answer is VERY easy, and very common...play the chord form up higher on the neck (like the Cm7 at the 8th fret) for the time being. Of course it won't be Gm7 but it'll allow your hand to play it successfully and more comfortably a few times before you bring it down to the 3rd fret. Many times in practice when something is difficult to "grip", moving it up the neck with ease things and yuo can allow the "experience" of playing it to help your hands get use to it.

If he can play major barre chords up and down the neck, then that should be a piece of cake
Members luckj Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Thumb on the E string/ first finger bar on the rest. Couldn't be easier. x 3 3 3 x 3
Members blumonk Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Thumb on the E string/ first finger bar on the rest. Couldn't be easier. x 3 3 3 x 3 wtf no. middle for the E and index for the bar.
Members gennation Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Thumb on the E string/ first finger bar on the rest. Couldn't be easier. x 3 3 3 x 3 That's not the fingering/voicing he's working on.
Members IsildursBane Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 Okay. Am7-- Fm-- Dm e 0-- e 1-- e 1B 1-- B 1-- B 3G 0-- G 1-- G 2D 2-- D 3-- D 0A 0-- A x-- A xE x-- E x-- E xAnd then the Gm7 Going from that voicing of the Dm, I'd try this: This allows you to keep your ring finger anchored on the B string, have very little movement when switching chords, and resolve notes in the Dm to adjacent notes on the same strings, which helps maintain overall tonality between the two chords. -Dan.
Members Jawbreakerr Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 wtf no. middle for the E and index for the bar. actually the best way is middle on e, ring finger on the rest.
Members astring Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 actually the best way is middle on e, ring finger on the rest. index in e string middle on mini barre
Members Jawbreakerr Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 index in e string middle on mini barre that way totally limits your movement.. say you wanna play a ii-V.. with your fingering, you have to move, but with mine, all you gotta do is drop the 7th down a half step. no hand movement at all. for example.. Min7th, to Min6th. you dont have to change position to move to the 6th. you just use your index finger to play the 6th, and lift up, or use your ring and pinky to play the other to 5th fret notes. x555x5 x554x5

It works with what I do. I can think a half a dozen tunes off the top of my head where I do that, and on a Joe Pass vid I notice he does it a lot also. That being said I never read about it in a book or anything, but it just works for me. Also the movement you refer to is really natrual for me with the way I do it. I also use this a lote6b6g7d5aXeX OMG I just picked up my guitar and you are right I do use the m and r fingers. But I do use the Index for chord melodies.
Members chittypantz Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 I use both of those (index only + fingerpicking, and middle + ring fingers) for that chord, depending on the context. I think it depends where you're going from there, and whether you need those other 3 fingers for melody notes. I also don't think there's a right or wrong way -- it pays to be able to do either. Sometimes, the middle + ring works better if you have melody notes you want to play on lower frets, for example.
Members Machine Gun Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 Haha. This thread has turned interesting. Just goes to show how many different voicings there are for each chord; and that's not even counting triads(really) or Arps
Members gennation Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 Other than the "barre" type fingerings, this is the most common "jazz" fingering for the Gm7 based on the low E string... --x----3-- = 3--3-- = 3--3-- = 3--x----3-- = 2 There was one other posted using the thumb which can get used a lot... --x----3-- = 1--3-- = 1--3-- = 1--x----3-- = T Try using that last one and play your minor pent riffs off it with the thumb and first finger planted. It's Jimi Hendrix overnight. That's the fingering he holds through many of the tunes like Machine Gun, Voodoo Chile, and others. It's how he played a lot of flowing licks with the low E string in the mix and the other notes ringing. SRV, Albert King, Buddy Guy, etc... But I think someone was suggesting this, which ain't worth your time... --x----3-- = 1--3-- = 1--3-- = 1--x----3-- = 2
Members alwaysharp Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 There's also-6- 3-6- 2-7- 4-5- 1-x--x-Kinda awkward at first, but it's great for chord melody stuff. And then this one is pretty stock-x--11- 4-10- 3-8-- 1-10- 2-x-
