Members JnBroadbent Posted October 7, 2007 Members Posted October 7, 2007 So I took some classes in high school but after that, I never used it again. I know a lot of different things concerning music theory but it's very broken. Can someone send me in the right direction from the beginning?
Members Jarardo Posted October 7, 2007 Members Posted October 7, 2007 I've been doing the same thing, since there's a lot of holes in my knowledge, sometimes the advanced stuff just goes over my head since I don't understand a term for something basic. So I've been going to Gennations site, which is http://lessons.mikedodge.com Then I started at the begining, printed out a copy of the whole lesson, and brought it to work with me. Then on my lunchbreak I look through it. And then I continued with lesson 2 and so on. I take notes on stuff that really strikes a chord for me. It's been helping a lot.
Members gennation Posted October 7, 2007 Members Posted October 7, 2007 Thanks for the plug Jarardo! The info you're interested in is the Beginner to Advanced Series. Start right at the top with the Intervals link and read through it from top to bottom. Then move to the Chord Construction link and read through it's chapters. Then move onto the Diatonic Theory chapters. The whole Series is a ground up approach to understand as opposed to getting "this and that" on the Internet. If read in order you should come away with a pretty complete foundation for persuing other teachings. I've been playing over 30 years and teaching over 20, and present the information free of charge. And, I'm available, along with everyone else here, to help you or help you double check things. It will also do you good if you read everything a few times. I have books I've had for over 30 years that I STILL go back and read again and again. With this thought process you'll end up anticipating what is going to be said, this will help you immensely in internalizing the material. Just take the time and spend a weekend with it, it will ONLY do you good, and it will help you with your goals. Enjoy!!!
Members Tailgunner Posted October 8, 2007 Members Posted October 8, 2007 The direction I would point to is understanding the Major Scale first and foremost. When you understand how the Intervals work in creating the Major Scale, everything else relative just falls into place. It is the foundation to how Music functions as a whole. Good Luck.

That's exactly what my Series covers, plus much more.
