Mark Wein Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I am putting together some lesson material for a student (actually for any student in the future that I teach this to) and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. What Popular/Rock songs have a guitar solo that uses only a Diatonic Major scale or a Major Pentatonic scale? I have a couple of songs that kind of fit the bill, but most are a combination of scales and tend to confuse the student a little...here are a few of those: What I Got or Santeria by Sublime Lights by Journey Just What I Needed by the Cars Celebration Day by Led Zeppelin Any better suggestions that I am missing? Thanks!
Members gennation Posted October 18, 2007 Members Posted October 18, 2007 Lookin out my Back Door by CCR is fairly straight Maj Pent accept for the little chords on the end. Members gennation Posted October 18, 2007 Members Posted October 18, 2007 How about Gimme Three Steps by Skyryd? That's Maj Pent. And Freebird is the Major scale...ah, maybe that throws in a an F here and there.
Mark Wein Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Thanks for the suggestions! I think I have a bunch of those transcribed already, too... Can you think of any that are straight up diatonic Major scale with no borrowed chords or outside notes? That is the hard one for me....
Members Dubb Posted October 18, 2007 Members Posted October 18, 2007 Guns N' Roses's cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. The solos are pretty simple, sound good, and are straight up G major. In fact, Slash does a fair amount of solos from the straight major scale, I guess the trick is finding ones that are simple enough for relative newbies to play. Hey, "November Rain" is another good one .Beast of Burden by the Stones. I usually "fake" most of the solo past the beginning, but it appears to be all in E major pentatonic.
