Members bdemon Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 How does it relate to the CAGED system? I understand what the CAGED system is, the bar chords & stuff, but for example, first position of minor pentatonic is called, what, the "A" shape? I know the five positions of minor pentatonic, but I don't see how each shape connects to those bar chords.
Members gennation Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 Let's use a A Min Pent for example... the 1st Position is the one with the lowest note of the pattern at the 5th fret of the A string. The 1st Position would be the "E" shape. Am (E Form)E---5-----B---5-----G---5-----D---7-----A---7-----E---5----- A Min Pent 1st Position (E Form) E----------------------------------5-B----------------------------5--8----G---------------------5--7-----------D---------------5--7-----------------A---------5--7-----------------------E---5--8----------------------------- The thing to remember with scales, especially patterns of the same scale, is that you're chord forms can be a mix of Major and Minor chords in one scale.
Members Dubb Posted October 29, 2007 Members Posted October 29, 2007 http://www.blguitar.com/lesson/advanced/cagedsystem.htmlThis link should shed some light. It shows how the location of the root notes within the CAGED patterns corresponds to five of the most common open chords (C, A, G, etc). This is the basis for naming the CAGED pattern shapes.
Members Sauntman Posted October 30, 2007 Members Posted October 30, 2007 Here is another link that might show it more clearly for you. First, start at the top of the page, with the open chord shapes and then move down to the CAGED barre chords. You will see the 3 fingered notes of the open chords are burried within the CAGED barre chords. Now, move further down the page and you will see the chords are also burried within the minor pentatonic scale shapes or patterns. For example, see the C chord......see it burried within the C shape pentatonic? The pattern of the C chord is contained within this C shape pentatonic scale. http://www.highcountryguitar.com/caged.htm
