Hi MI students,

I wanted to know if there's anybody here who has been to Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. I am interested in MI's performance certificate program (for Guitar). To test out for their Harmony, Ear Training and Theory courses, what books should I refer to? I want to cut down on time and expenditure by testing out for as many courses as I can.

I have a couple of friends who teach there (not guitar, though...bass and drums)....I'll see if I can get any info for you...

Sign up at http://thegearpage.net/board and PM user KRosser. He was last years teacher of the year at GIT(MI) last year. He's very friendly and helpful. Search his user name at that site, he's very active there and I'm sure has posted the info you're looking for. But, just PM him and ask him directly. He'll help you.

Here is some info from a recent grad:

The book that MI uses for their first several theory classes is a book simply entitled "Harmony" by Walter Piston.

For ear training:

The teacher for the first 3 or 4 quarters was a guy named Carlos Campos and we worked out of a packet that he put together. Everything else was just him sitting behind the piano playing stuff and we had to try and hear it.

Hope it helps!

I did years of self study, and reference, out of Harmony back in the early 80's. I found it at the Salvation Army, had it for about 2 years then it got ripped off in our hotel room on the road. Strangely I've never replaced it but. I should though because it's a killer book.

I'll have to check it out, then! When I was in college we used this book:

Elementary training for Musicians by Paul Hindemuth

It was awesome, but pretty difficult...I don't think that our class got through the first third of it....mine was "borrowed and never returned" by a student...

I'm currently attending MI and I'll say for theory (my personal preference) is Mark Levine's Jazz Theory but MI has some books out. Look for those and you'll be set. For ear training, there's a ton of free software out there. Just google ear training software and I'm sure you'll find a million. That should get you started I think.

Thanks everybody for their posts. I really appreacite all the help.

alwaysharp, thanks. how is ur experience studying at MI so far? Is finding a place to live close to the school easy? Are you getting a chance to play with a lot of other musicians there? Are people open about collaborating? I have heard that MI is more Rock oriented school. Is that true at all? How many hours do students spend on practising every day? How much free time do they have?

I am excited just thinking about going back to school. Hopefully sometime next year.

I found a place within a few blocks without much hassle. I'm constantly playing with new people. Just today I played a tune I'd never played before with five people I've never played with before. So it's pretty cool in that sense. I can't speak for how much everyone practices. I mean, everybody's different. Me personally though, I practice a ton. Pretty much from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep I'm playing music. MI is definitely a "rock oriented" school these days. MI was bought out awhile ago (I think about 7 yrs) and apparently the guy is mainly concerned with putting out rock stars. But there is an amazing education available there. I mean, there are so many amazing teachers there. You've got Scott Henderson, Jimmy Wyble, Jaime Finnley, Jaime Rosenn, Allen Hinds, Jinshi Ozaki, Sid Jacobs, Bruce Buckingham and a ton more. You'll get out of it what you put into it.
