Members Peekaboo Fuzzy Posted November 28, 2007 Members Posted November 28, 2007 I have the Michael Angelo Battio "Speed Kills" DVD and it's O.K. Just really a bunch of exercises played fast than slow with tab. Can anyone recommend a more user friendly DVD that really has a more approachable "teaching element" IMO rather than "here is the first exercise, here is the second"...etc. I know it's not a very complicated thing but I would like to get a handle on it and master it with better results-not just arpeggio exercise played fast then slow. Thanks!

Members Peekaboo Fuzzy Posted November 28, 2007 Author Members Posted November 28, 2007 Nice vid for the basics regarding motion. Recommend me a good DVD with string skipping alternate picking and three notes per string lessons for getting up to snuff ala 80's shred.
Members ndemattheis Posted November 28, 2007 Members Posted November 28, 2007 Paul Gilbert's videos are pretty good and focus on alternate picking and string skipping. I have the older tape, but I think he has an updated video that is probably good also. I think this goes deeper into alternate picking and covers dynamic excercises.
Members Santuzzo Posted November 28, 2007 Members Posted November 28, 2007 Down...up...down...up... Virgman = Blumonk/Reddragon????:poke:To the original poster:I'd recommend Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock and John Petrucci's Rock Discipline !

Members Peekaboo Fuzzy Posted November 29, 2007 Author Members Posted November 29, 2007 Thanks guys. I'll check out those two mentioned. And Virgman, nothin wrong with what you posted. It's all good here!
Members Dimebag666 Posted November 29, 2007 Members Posted November 29, 2007 +1 for the paul gilbert stuff. and there's lots of it on youtube
Members gennation Posted November 29, 2007 Members Posted November 29, 2007 Check out TheLightSpeeders thread on his lessons. He's a helacious speed picker. Also there another poster here who had some great speed picking breakdowns too, it just about a week ago or so, can't remember his name though.
Members Santuzzo Posted November 29, 2007 Members Posted November 29, 2007 Vinnie Moore's videosOh, yeah, the Vinnie Moore videos are great, too !In the first video he explains how he used to practice his 1-hour picking workout, which is basically chromatics for the most part, but in the 2nd video he shows great examples of picking applied to 3 nps scale patterns.

Members Virgman Posted November 29, 2007 Members Posted November 29, 2007 Oh, yes, did you mean eddygaz? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqJfDpFUJwY His YouTube lessons are excellent ! Eddygaz had some good vids but they've been removed for some reason. I downloaded his Shred 1 & 2 vids from youtube and could make them available if anyone wants. I don't think Eddygaz would mind. He must have been a bad boy as his account has been closed.

Oh, I didn't know that ....Why would they close his account? It's such a shame, 'cos his lesson-videos were great !I wish I had them save/downloaded somehow ....I hope he will upload them again somewhere else then.
Members gennation Posted November 29, 2007 Members Posted November 29, 2007 Yep, eddygaz was the one. But, TheLightSpeeder is hyper fast. Regardless of eddy's being up or not, TLS site would be very good, and very challenging.

Thanks! You gotta do stuff like play everything tension free. That means as soon as you exceed that effortless feeling, back off. Once you notice fatigue pack it up till the next session. If that comes out to 15 minutes a day, that's what you do. Once you have your limits mapped out slow down and work on tension free accuracy. Eric Johnson has an interesting method. He picks upwards and not across the string. I tried this and it's like butter. This is worth learning and mastering since most playing falls into this zone. You can always transition to speed picking once you're in fact there.
Members Peekaboo Fuzzy Posted November 30, 2007 Author Members Posted November 30, 2007 Thanks again guys. 1001gear, excellent advice. I appreciate it.
Members Norman Kim Posted November 30, 2007 Members Posted November 30, 2007 I completely agree with Santuzzo for the Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci DVDs. They are very informative and direct. Check out the sequel(s) to MAB's Speed Kills; they're somewhat helpful (but it seems that you want more teaching than just exercises).
