Sweep Picking 101

Hey guys I am a guitarrist who started mainly as a rhythm guy ... but I need to step it up as a lead guy ... I know basic Pentatonic and Mayor Scales but I want that Sweep Picking technique and Minor Scales incoporating now that I am in a metal core band ... can someone help me out? any books? websites? tracks? that I can start little by little and work my way up to get this done? thanks

I would start by listening to the bands that use that style that you want and try to learn as much as you can by ear. It will help you a great deal in the long run just to try to learn as much as you can that way.

 

Also check out cyberfret.com for a lot of info about arpeggios,modes, improvising and other stuff like that. there's plenty of youtube stuff out there.

For basic "up/down" sweep picking try Micheal Angelo Batio's 'Speed Kills' DVD. He covers basic major/minor "up/down" arps and the technique itself. It's one of those techniques that is hard to explain in words, but very easy to demonstrate.
