That's a handy site for some campfire songs.

It's scary how much money George Strait has made doing campfire songs.

People are spending their lives learning to shred at 200 mph and George is making millions singing to cows.

Where did the term campfire songs come from? Many country songs contain great playing and lyrics (some don't) and could not be played nearly as well around a campfire by one person. IMHO it demeans a fine type of music that's obviously loved by millions or George and others wouldn't be making millions.:)

Regarding that site, not so much the music.

That's a great campfire song site because you can play 95% (my own estimate) with straight/basic open chords that many players don't have an issue with, can memorize easy enough, can play them by name, and are probably exactly what the orignal recording is using. So it's easy to sound spot on, for most players.

But, with campfire "performances" a voice is necessary. Sadly, that's the tricky part for most guitarist, so...

you copy off these song sheets, pass them around the campfire and let all the drunk people sing their favorite songs...and all you need to do is play the basic open chord...and EVERYONE has a great time.

I think that's what "campfire songs" mean for most people.

Absolutely no offense intended to this type of music or George Strait.

They are indeed many great songs like this and George Strait is a superstar.

What I meant was that many guitarists spend their time learning to do things (play arpeggios at supersonic speeds for example) that nobody really cares about. They think if they learn this they will somehow make it big. Nobody gives a damn about it truthfully.

Ask someone on the street who Yngwie Malmsteen is and I'd doubt they would know.

People better appreciate a song of simple chords with engaging lyrics.

Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell is a example of this. They are great songs.

What is the sound of a shredder playing in a cow pasture?....haymaker....cows making big pies?

If a shredder plays in a cow pasture are they really shredding or just scaring the cows?

Country "players" deserve more respect than most guitarist as far as ability. It's one thing to blow up and down a 'scale'. It's another thing to blow up and down a 'song' the way those guys do.

I think some of the most "maturing" gigs I've ever had was playing in show level country bands (not the weekend pick up gigs, but the national gigs, and the ones playing huge halls and opening for national acts).

Play country for about a year or so and you'll be playing like you'd never believe. And, the chicks dig it too ;)

I didn't think you intended to offend. I was just mentioning a few facts and was curious, that's all. Regards, Flip.:):thu:
