Members bigboy_78 Posted February 20, 2008 Members Posted February 20, 2008 I've just bought a lap steel. Does anyone know any good sites or have any tips on how to make the most of them.
Members Jasco Posted February 20, 2008 Members Posted February 20, 2008 I've only played one a couple times, so I'm not a pro at lap steel. But I just tuned it to an open chord and played slide licks on it. If you know any open tuning slide on guitar it should translate pretty effortlessly.
Members Funkwire Posted February 23, 2008 Members Posted February 23, 2008 Try starting with G9 tuning. Low to high: D-G-D-G-A-D. Lay the bar across the strings. Just like playing slide in open G on a standard guitar, the G chord is at the 12th fret, C at the 5th fret, and D at the 7th. Behind the bar (towards the nut), use your second and third fingers to bend the 2nd string up. You will bend a 2nd into a 3rd, and get that distinctive 'crying' sound associated with lap and pedal steel guitars. I apologize if I'm not explaining it clearly...I was fortunate enough to have someone demonstrate the technique to me years ago.
