Members EDS Posted March 4, 2008 Members Posted March 4, 2008 Hey, I'm looking for a good song to use for a group guitar class. Here are the conditions: 1) Has three chords A, D, E. 2) Reasonably well-known pop/rock song3) Strumming not too difficult These three chords are I, IV, V so they could be applied to any # of common songs, but I was looking for a well-known song. I'm sure there are a ton, I just can't think of any. Thanks
Members mosiddiqi Posted March 4, 2008 Members Posted March 4, 2008 Louie, louie or wild thing....showing my age there!!
Members Ericjake Posted March 4, 2008 Members Posted March 4, 2008 Yes, as u said ther are tons: La Bamba Twist and shouts Log tall Sally Transported to A, almost every Rock&Roll song will fit.
Members EDS Posted March 4, 2008 Author Members Posted March 4, 2008 Thanks for the suggestions. I know Wild Thing is in A, but usually that's played with bar chords or power chords, so I use that song later when we cover power chords. I'll look into La Bamba and Long tall sally, I haven't heard those songs in ages. I thought Twist and Shout is in the key of D, but my memory might be off? I know I could take any I IV V song and transpose it, but I want something that uses those three "cowboy" chord shapes in the key of A, so we could play along with the recording. If its in another key, this isn't possible, and I'm not about to introduce the concept of transposition.

Members Verence Posted March 4, 2008 Members Posted March 4, 2008 "So Says I" by The Shins comes to mind, though I it may be D Am E now that I think of it...

Members gennation Posted March 4, 2008 Members Posted March 4, 2008 Gloria (another one that's been played in so many Keys I not sure if the original was A or not)
Members clickonce Posted March 5, 2008 Members Posted March 5, 2008 Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me E & A for verse.. E, D, A, E for chorus...
Poparad Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 AC/DC - "Back in Black," and probably countless others. The chorus also has a G chord in it.
Members mc5nrg Posted March 5, 2008 Members Posted March 5, 2008 Key to the Highway 8 bar blues standard in A
Members Ericjake Posted March 5, 2008 Members Posted March 5, 2008 "Cotton Fields" by Creedence Clearwater Revival This one uses only A D E chords.
Members Funkwire Posted March 6, 2008 Members Posted March 6, 2008 Well, there's and F and a G in there, too, but how about 'Rock and Roll All Nite'?
Members Jeff AMM Posted March 7, 2008 Members Posted March 7, 2008 Here's a blog post with a list of 3 chord songs. Many of these could be played with ADE.

There's also number of music books covering nothing but popular 3-chord-songs: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-5228252-9751345?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=3+chord+songs&x=0&y=0 There's a slew of them.
Members Ericjake Posted March 19, 2008 Members Posted March 19, 2008 Just heard this one on the radio and thought it should be in A, D, E. "I use to love her" G'N'R:thu:
