Members sratiug Posted May 27, 2008 Members Posted May 27, 2008 I really need to improve my ears what is the best way in going about this? I mean musically not aesthetically haha. Learning scales???? How can I hear chords or notes and knoe how to repeat what I hear myself. This takes time? Ive been playing guitar for nearly 10 years (playing not practising formally) and am really bad at picking up tunes, can guess chords and stuff for simple songs but have some difficulties. Any good links or references cheers.

Members Virgman Posted May 27, 2008 Members Posted May 27, 2008 An interesting topic. "How to play by ear." Why is this important to you? Can you read music? Do you know any scales? Playing totally by ear is pretty tough when you get into more complicated music. I'd compare it to speaking a language. AS JnBroadbent above said, picking out melodies and chords form songs is a way. It takes years for a child to utter simple sentences, much longer still to speak with a decent vocabulary. Learn many songs in your preferred genre of music. How many songs do you know? A veteran performing artist might know several hundred.

Members 1001gear Posted May 28, 2008 Members Posted May 28, 2008 Yeah. I took a shot and ordered some Auralis. Best thing I ever did. I can now do 6 part dictation in one take. No bull.

Uh huh.... but remember to call your doctor if you find yourself transcribing for four hours or longer! There have been documented cases of people overdosing. When they took too much they could hear things BEFORE they were played!
Members sratiug Posted May 28, 2008 Author Members Posted May 28, 2008 Well done a bit research and I think perhaps something like this may be key to helping me in this area?http://mvmtravel.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html What you reckon guys? Cheers for the replies! PS- I don't get the banana joke? PPS- Why do I keep getting private emails about Budhism?
Members chisa Posted May 28, 2008 Members Posted May 28, 2008 sing along with tunes, visualise where the melody is going and what it is doing. also try to memorise the sound of different intervals by using common sounds - (i.e. most doorbells are a maj 3, first notes miles davis plays on all blues, maj 6th, whole lotta love, min 3rd, etc). other than that it just takes time.
Members chisa Posted May 28, 2008 Members Posted May 28, 2008 This might help! link broke, working now, excellent site. much easier to do it each individual note i find. thanks for sharing that!
