Members Girvinator Posted July 18, 2008 Members Posted July 18, 2008 Just started to learn this cool technique. Anyone have any cool/easy riffs to play?
Members 1001gear Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 Sweep tapping doesn't sound right. Elaborate please. I think Fred Astaire once danced with a broom but that's all else that comes to mind.
Members Kuroyume Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 Sounds to me like tapping across strings in a pseudo-arpeggiated style but I'd need to see it or tab to be sure.
Members pirata Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 I think he means when people sweep normally then they bring there right hand up and hit a note.
Members bulevardi.be Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 I think he means this:http://www.peertrainer.com/roberta/tapping_techniques.htm
Members 1001gear Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 Yeah,It's essentially sweeping butted into some tapping. My answer to the OP is take up keyboards. Learn to tackle difficult passages in their entirety - melody, accompaniment, form, composition, the whole thing. Little girls have been mastering this stuff for decades. THEN go apply whatever you can to the fretboard.
Members gennation Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 I'm pretty sure he means the Tony MacAlpine thing. It happens at about 2:48 in this vid...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XApPYEfJECI

Members 1001gear Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 It could be called a musical device but when the shredders do it, the tapping and picking are indistinguishable. It's more a specific fingering than a technical category. Tab instructions IOW.Sweep Tapping makes enough sense once its clarified. What was your question?

Members 1001gear Posted July 19, 2008 Members Posted July 19, 2008 I'd still suggest going the keyboard route. Watch that Tony Macalpine clip Genn posted. If memory serves, he's an accomplished pianist and even tours as one occasionally. In that context, what to shred on guitar becomes largely a matter of adapting the piano stuff. You can start with the 'Gig Bag Book of Arpeggios'. It's got arps out to #11ths in all keys, tabbed and notated. Then just do the mixing intuitively. I'd try to be systematic about it but it's your guitar.
Members The Burninator Posted July 21, 2008 Members Posted July 21, 2008 Do you have anything against using tabs/guitar pro? I only know of two programs to slow songs down without lowering pitch - MS media player, and there's a winamp plug-in called the pacemaker that does it. I've never used the pacemaker, I did use the media player to slow songs down - but never acually tried to transcribe this way.
Members 1001gear Posted July 21, 2008 Members Posted July 21, 2008 Best Practice is a good one. Quicktime has a plugin as well.
Members Girvinator Posted July 21, 2008 Author Members Posted July 21, 2008 No nothing against tabs but I have a learning curve of not being able to play something if I can't hear how it's supposed to go. I will try these plugins fellas, thanks!
Members The Burninator Posted July 22, 2008 Members Posted July 22, 2008 You're welcome, post a video once you nail this solo

Members Girvinator Posted July 23, 2008 Author Members Posted July 23, 2008 1001gear, can you elaborate more on the MS Media Player.? Do you mean Windows MP or what?
Members 1001gear Posted July 24, 2008 Members Posted July 24, 2008 Just get WMP 11 from the MS downloads. Should be built in. I use Best Practice although it might only work on CDs. I have to check.
