Members greenbean Posted August 28, 2008 Members Posted August 28, 2008 One of my coworkers just started playing guitar. She is currently taking informal lessons from one of her friends and is learning the basics about chords and playing rhythms in time, etc. Her friend is also teaching her a bit of theory as well. I talk to her pretty regularly about how her playing is going and one of the things she says she has trouble with is moving out of first position and around the fretboard. Are there any exercises I can suggest to her that might help? I'm interested in trying anything you guys suggest as well, because I'm always looking to improve my playing.
Members Drew5887 Posted August 29, 2008 Members Posted August 29, 2008 I think that it may help to learn pieces that take place on different parts of the neck. If she is learning scales, improvising up and down one string at a time will allow her to move more linearly across the fretboard.
Members Kuroyume Posted August 30, 2008 Members Posted August 30, 2008 I also find it helpful to remember that, from a pattern point of view, any pattern on the adjacent pairs of strings (E-A, D-g, b-e) is replicated simply by moving the pattern two frets up (E-A to D-g) or three frets up (D-g to b-e). And, of course, all chords and scales (and notes) repeat at the 12th fret. Once you know anything from open to 11th fret, you can apply it identically from 12th fret and beyond.
