Members mat4365 Posted September 16, 2008 Members Posted September 16, 2008 I play guitar in a soul band but I'm trying to develop more of a Jazz sound in my playing. Unfortunately I sometimes 'over Jazz' things for the tatses of my fellow bandmembers! Any ideas for bluesy or soulful Jazz licks to use to appease them but still keep my jazz hunger saisfied.. Any soul or gospel ideas to incorporate? - seriously I love those sounds and would love to learn more about how to create them.
Members taiko Posted September 16, 2008 Members Posted September 16, 2008 Sounds like that scene from the Commitments when the sax player cuts loose.
Members mat4365 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Members Posted September 16, 2008 hehe..! it's not like that really.. I like the stuff we do.. alot.. I suppose I'm just asking for some help with blues, soul and gospel riffs.. everything I try ends up sounding either too much like jazz or like I'm running through pentatonic scale practice!
Members Stackabones Posted September 17, 2008 Members Posted September 17, 2008 Seriously check out Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue for jazzy blues. For soul guitar, Steve Cropper. Just get something (any hit from Stax) and do everything he did.
Members heavy D Posted September 17, 2008 Members Posted September 17, 2008 I'd focus on learning to use bits of chords, double stops, etc. You want things that add to the music without sounding like you're soloing. Listen to the vocals and fill in between them- it's all about supporting the vocal. Learn the vocal lines on your instrument so you know how to better ornament them. Same with horn stabs, keyboard lines, etc. Learning to lead into parts, lead to another chord, etc is important. But above all, listen to the stuff you want to sound like and cop licks. It's not about theory, it's about vocabulary. Get some stuff you like in your bag and figure out ways to apply it to your songs.

I think this might do the trick.http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Beyond-Robben-Ford/dp/B00007D5JTIf you aren't familiar with Robbens playing, here is a sample
Members mat4365 Posted September 17, 2008 Author Members Posted September 17, 2008 Thanks. I will try this stuff out... have also been looking at some of Mark Wein and Mike Dodge's lessons via The Official Lesson Loft Lesson Thread and these have been helping too!

Members catscurlyear Posted September 17, 2008 Members Posted September 17, 2008 check out some george benson his more blues stuff , cleaner hendrix type sounds also work in that soulfull context ,also albert lee type licks work great against soul tracks in my opinion ,i don`t think i could hack doing a steve cropper all night.or you could brush up on some fancy footwork.
Members mat4365 Posted September 17, 2008 Author Members Posted September 17, 2008 Thanks for the artist reccommendations have been checking them out - love that Robben Ford stuff.. have you got that book 335clone? am interested - what sort of level is it? What did it do for you? (I'd say technically I'm intermediate and have a pretty good grasp of music theory and concepts).
