A jazz-blues idea

Take some cool sounding phrases from a Charlie Parker song, Scrapple From The Apple for instance. Transpose them to the key of C and play each phrase over the changes, transposing according to the chord changes as you go.

Perhaps you can do it very slowly so that once the phrase has become very comfortable and you start to want to play variations on it things aren't moving too fast for you and there's room for altering the rhythm and adding some notes.

Keep doing this with different bebop tunes and pretty soon you might have a pretty decent bebop phrase vocabulary to throw into your blues playing.
