Members CM1000 Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 I am going to be trying out to get into a music school in 2 months. I have to do some basic stuff, like a theory test, improvisation, hearing test, repeating phrases on, a prima vista assignment, basic piano, etc.. I also have to play 2 songs in different styles.I am probably going to be playing with a small band consisting of a bassist, pianist, and probably a drummer. (I play guitar)the first song i have chosen it Blues for Alice. Now I have to choose a second song, since its in a different style, I don't know if I should take another jazz song, like maybe a ballad? but i'm leaning a bit more toward a rock song or something, but I dont know what to play. playing in this tryout is to ensure that I can play together with a band more than showing that im extremely fast or whatever. I've always been more of a rock/metla guitarist but started getting into jazz in the last year. so I figure it might be a good idea to show what I can do in two pretty different settings? is this a good idea? and last.. any suggestions as to rock, pop, or blues songs I could play? there are so many and I have no idea what to choose from.. thanks for any help! -Martin

Poparad Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 When they say "different style," are you sure they specifically mean a completely different style of music? Often for juries/hearings in college, we had to pick tunes of contrasting styles, but that always meant swing, latin, or ballad, but still all within jazz.

I think you are exactly right, but its just a bit difficult for me to choose, and I figured that maybe playing two very contrasting things would show my versatility? or is it a risk and kind of stupid to play something heavy right after I play 'blues for alice' ?
