Members The Lou-Dog Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 Are an essential tool for improvisation. Just using chromatic notes a semi-tone out of the tonic, 3rd and 5th of a chord tone are great tools for interesting sounds in Jazz, and a huge amount of jazz musicians do this. Just listen to the opening phrases of Kenny Burrels solo in "Midnight Blue" just had to share that
Members Stackabones Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 I dig the semitone out of the 3rd and the 5th (and even some of the quarter tones you can squeeze out with bends), but I'm no fan of the major 7 in a blues. I think you'll have better luck with the b7. Maybe you were referring to the b9, which can be hip. Midnight Blue is an amazing session -- it's the guitarist's Kind of Blue.
Members bongfodder Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 In what resolution are you thinking? To the triadic tones I think of them as leading tones,to a leap I think of them as higher tension devices, degree dependent. Chromatics don't have to resolve by half step and I know you're not trying to say they do but someone reading this quick could be mistaken.
Members The Lou-Dog Posted January 22, 2009 Author Members Posted January 22, 2009 Someone reading what you just said could be confused easily. as i am.

And yes, the Midnight Blue sessions are super excellent
Members mosiddiqi Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 I'm a rock player but I love and use the b9 to 9 move a lot as well as the b6 to 6..easy to fit in with standard pentatonic/dorian licks.

Members gennation Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 Chromatic's are even more important/useful when they aren't linear.
Members DanSlime Posted January 22, 2009 Members Posted January 22, 2009 I really want to learn that bebop type phrasing. I have a few licks and devices (like aproaching chord tones). But it definitely needs work. Duke Robillard has this rhythm changes tune called 'Calillac Slim'. I think if I just sit down and transcribe it I'll be a better person.

Playing over Rhythm Changes wouldn't necessarily be based around chromatics. Just follow the "changes"..."rhythmically".

True dat. But...the chromatic bebop thing would be good to know. That particular track I mentioned has that swing to it. Of course bird is the archetect of that style.
Members windmill Posted January 23, 2009 Members Posted January 23, 2009 Dan let us know how you go with that transcribing, if it works I might give it a go. I'd like to be a better person too
