Right Hand When Practicing Scales

Hey guys! Hopefully you can help me with this!

I'm currently trying to speed up my playing by practicing scales, but I never really understood how to position my right arm (i am right handed). When i strike the notes, say i am playing the pentatonic scale, should i have my arm be stationary and use my hand in a fixed position to pick the notes or should I be flicking my wrist?

Any help would be much appreciated! :p

Have you watched some shreddy youtube vids? Check out those fast guys like Michael Angelo Batio, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie. Everybody probably does it different. Some of those styles look like it would hurt after a few years of that (tennis elbow and stuff).

I've seen some but I'll check out some more, thanks! I'm looking into practicing steady/fast alternate picking instead of shredding though.

It really depends on the style, feel, and tone you're going for. You can pick from the arm, wrist or even just the fingers, or any combination of those. I find it easier to lock in rhythmically with more arm movement, but easier to to do complicated string skipping things with more finger movement. Again, the sound you want plays a big part as well.

My advice- go for whatever feels most natural to you. If you anchor your picking hand or not will also have a big impact on this as well.
