Opening lick of solo to Communication Breakdown

Howdy. I've basically got this, except I am not positive of the opening lick. I've been using as a guide this excellent tutorial (solo about halfway through the clip):

This is what I think it is (repeated many times of course), can anyone correct me, or confirm it?:

Yeah I had been using that particular tab alongside the youtube clip. As far as I can tell, it isn't precisely correct, although it is close. Part of the problem is that I hear the same thing repeated over and over, and that tab shows quite a bit of variety in the lick. The guy in the youtube clip doing the demo apparently also thinks that it is the same thing repeated.

Thanks for the help though.

Opening lick of the solo? this is what he is playing although it is pretty sloppy

It's funny that you indicate the last 12 on the B string is sustained...it's that exact note, when picked, that trips me up (speed-wise). When I sustain instead of pick that note it doesn't sound right (but I can play it easily then).

Could it be that the overdrive, guitar tone, and amp tone is what is making it sound right for Page (and the guy in the youtube clip), and wrong for me?

And I like the idea of including the top E string at 12...I think that's another part of what I am missing. I toyed with it some before, but I'll play with it again.

That's exactly how I play it...hard to get it sounding as sloppy as Page though funnily enough..

Yeah there's a special meeting of talent, slopiness, tone, and energy on the studio recording.

If I may persist at the last question, do you also let the last note in this phrase sustain from the previous, or do you individually pick it?

Thanks, I appreciate it. Interesting.

I just kind of sweep my pick down and then back up while executing the riff.... so i guess it is a sustain. It create a kind of weird audio illusion as it kind of sounds like the note is picked ... but it cant be. Least not how I (and likely Page) execute it.

Sorry, been away for a few days!..but Jeremy's answer is the same as mine..I sort of sweep up/down through that lick and that note sort of hangs..all a bit vague I know.

Huh. I tried to sweep it, but my only skill at this sort of thing is to alternate pick it. It would take a long time for me to re-engineer this technique. I think the results are the same, but it's possible that it is this difference which is creating the differences I hear.

With more practice, I've been able to pick that final note, which gets the lick sounding more like the original. I am still a bit sloppy at it but I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Its a lot easier just dragging your pick up and down if you ask me. The original lick wouldnt be strictly alternate picked so to get that vibe you should work on the drag IMO

Cheers!
