Members bbach Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 Do you actually count out the whole song, as in "1 e and a 2 and" etc? Or, do you simply play the notes out with the music and get a feel for it?I'm finding practicing with a metronome difficult without counting out. Just wondering if I'm alone in that little problem.
Members gayforjesus Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 i pretty much never count unless i'm getting lost on something. i'll nod or tap my foot, tho. but if you're just starting out, go ahead and count until it becomes automatic or subconscious or whatever.
Members Li Shenron Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 Do you mean count the beat or count the bars? I do sometimes count the bars or sections when there is a very long repetitive part of the song (such as someone else's solo or the song ending) and I might get lost. I don't think it's a very good thing to do... good players don't need to count IMO, they would rather just feel when the time is up or otherwise they would make it flexible length and agree on a signal from one band member. But we're not that good and usually we just agree on a specific length in bars, chord cycles or riff cycles and everyone has to make sure he ends at the right time, in which case I count the cycles in my head.
Members jeremy_green Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 I only count on very technical sections where it is an off time and I need to really NAIL the part. Its a pretty sterile thing for me to do so i wouldnt want to do it too much. When you are practicing it is fine
Members halfwhole Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 i did when i was learning to read music. now it's mostly internalized so i don't need to unless it's stupid complex stuff
Members jonfinn Posted March 24, 2009 Members Posted March 24, 2009 I always count. Although it's not always a conscious effort. Depends how hard it is.

Members Firelavasauce Posted March 27, 2009 Members Posted March 27, 2009 I count 16ths for the whole time just about in 24 34 44. When sight-reading I'll count just the rhythm shown in my head. I guess it depends on the difficulty of the song and how good I want the performance to go.
Moderators Jed Posted March 27, 2009 Moderators Posted March 27, 2009 I count the bars often to keep my phrasing patterns linked to 4 or 8 bar sections. I'll count beats sometimes for non-standard time sigs. I only count the beat subdivisions before the song to set the feeling. cheers,
Members PigWings_v2.0 Posted March 27, 2009 Members Posted March 27, 2009 Even if you're not counting vocally it's always good to tap your foot or something and keep up with the beat. Eventually it's something you'll do with out thinking about it.
