Members boston1991 Posted August 7, 2009 Members Posted August 7, 2009 I bet there's a rule that says I can't ask this b/c it's been overasked. Let me know with a stern finger shaking if that's the case... anyhow. I've recently gotten it in my head that I want to learn how to play the guitar. I've actually been pondering over this for a while, whether I have time for it or not. I know how to read music pretty well (harp and piano major at a conservatory... I know, I know, please, spare me... there's so much stereotype that goes with harpists, it's embarrassing...) Any beginner guitar books you'd recommend?
Members meganutt7 Posted August 7, 2009 Members Posted August 7, 2009 Honestly, it depends on what your goal is. I wouldn't get a dumb book that will obviously not appeal to your intellect... If you're a good reader, you really just need to learn the mechanics and the technical aspects of playing the guitar... Iwould just use online resources or a "Guitar for Dummies" type book, just for the technical information contained therein.. To help you find the notes, etc. and develop solid fingerstyle or picking technique.
Members Virgman Posted August 7, 2009 Members Posted August 7, 2009 It depends on what style of guitar you want to learn. Try to pick a genre. Metal? Rock? Blues? Jazz? Acoustic?
Members girevik Posted August 7, 2009 Members Posted August 7, 2009 In addition to the above good responses, I'll point out that most beginner books are oriented towards fingerstyle (fingers only) or pick style. If you want hybrid picking (pick and fingers at the same time), there's only one book I know of that will take you from zero to advanced in one volume.
Members boston1991 Posted August 8, 2009 Author Members Posted August 8, 2009 Hm... I'm not entirely sure. Is there some way to get a feel for these different genres? I was rather looking for a good intro that wasn't going to bore me to tears.

Youtube has lots of videos to check out for artists. Take some time to really think this through. You want to find a style that really can motivate you and make it fun and interesting. Then you can get a good book or DVD and really get into it. There are some good ones but there are also some that, while the author is a excellent player, the actual lesson plan doesn't cut it.

If you're majoring on other instruments as a classical player already, I guess sticking to the classical genre for guitar might not be a bad idea for you. Youtube is a very useful tool for getting a feel for many genres of guitar playing. The search feature on youtube is very good.
Members wooki97 Posted August 25, 2009 Members Posted August 25, 2009 hi guys, to learn I constantly watch youtube. for finger position or alternated position etc. I also buy books. in my case, classical guitar books. listening to the mp3 or midi of the track helps too. Members Steadfastly Posted August 30, 2009 Members Posted August 30, 2009 If you can afford the time and money, look for an experienced guitar teacher. If not, get this. http://www.learnandmasterguitar.com/ It's affordable, professional and it works.
