12 bar blues solo using 3 notes

A 3 note solo just for fun.

Each time through the 12 bars, I use only 3 notes from the minor pentatonic scale. An exercise in avoiding playing too many notes. It was hard... but a good way to practice if you suffer from the "playing-too-many-notes-Syndrome"... ;)

I like that exercise - pick any 3 (or 4, etc) notes and find as many ways to make them interesting as you can. Bends, rhythm, note order, etc. I also like the "only play while holding your breath - when you have to breath, stop playing." Helps prevent running on and on - endless nooding/random scales - and forces some kind of phrasing.

Thanks, glad you liked it. It's good practice, and it is hard to do well. I tend to overplay with too many notes, so this exercise is good for me.

How does Mr Knobs, who is not listed as a moderator, edit someone's post?

And what does "CG" mean?

Just curious
:D

I finally checked this thread out and it is very cool.

Tasty playing Mr. Rotren. Were you channeling Jimmy Vaughan? ;)

Now who is "Mr. Knobs"?

And what is "cg"?

I want answers on my desk by 10AM.

Thanks, I'm glad for the positive feedback.

Jimmie Vaughan? Nah, not consciously anyway. :) I was just trying to force myself to use few notes, which was not so easy. Good practice for me too.

It sounded really good. Such an easy thing to do actually, not a very complicated concept but it works so well.

A similar idea I got from a teacher once was "Stick to your first idea for entire blues solo. Do variations by all means, develop it, make it fit the chord changes if you feel you need to but stay with that first idea".

So, I tried it right then and there and played my best (and easiest) solo in months :)

Thanks guys. Can you be more specific about your question, FlatFive? I use hammer-ons, pull-offs, slurs, whatever I can think of to vary to sound and attack of notes. It's not something I'm consciously thinking about when I'm playing.
