Hello out there. Does anyone have any ideas about the best way to create my own fretboard diagrams i.e. scale positions, root positions, etc? Are there any software programs available to make the job easier? Thanks for any suggestions.

If you want scale patterns just google them, is the easiest way.

Otherwise get the formula (like the WWHWWWH for the major) and build them and fill a blank fretboard with the notes you get from the formula.

I just used a drawing program at the start. Then later on I used Excel to make my diagrams. One thing to remember is that all the fretboard diagrams in the world won't get you to memorize the fretboard. To do that you have to start learning how to see the fretboard itself is the diagram.

cheers,

I made this tool a couple of years ago.

Open this in Paint and copy and paste away...(a couple of samples below that were created with it)...

I wanted the same thing a few years back for some scales I was learning. Being the anal artist I am I made my own in illustrator. I have a template I can make what ever I want from. It also has dots that can be colored what ever you wish. Its not very good for writing on but if you PM me I'd be more than happy to send you a copy if you can use it.

It looks like this.

I also have a maple version.
