Compendium of licks/riffs based on CAGED forms?

Not trying to be a wisea$$ or anything, but since CAGED maps out the logic of the entire fretboard...

pretty much every lick you've ever heard can be based in CAGED.

Start Me Up and Brown Sugar by the Stones are common subsets found in CAGED. Hendrix' Wait Until Tomorrow or Three Little Bears use the same subset. And endless list of Faces, Black Crowes, etc...use the same subset.

The key to CAGED is not only learning the fretboard patterns, but its the power of the subset notes that make it music or voicings.

Really, everything is based in CAGED when it's played on guitar. Does that make sense?

Those Stones tune are always using the A or G form and the C form. Here's Start Me Up:

C F F

E-----------

B--5---6--6----

G--5---5--5---

D--5---7--7----

A-----------

E------------

The C chord could be a fragment of an A form or a G form, but since it's played with the first finger we'll say G form.

The F chord is a fragment of the C form.

Some people really think their are only TWO forms to CAGED because of the csimilarities between the fingerings.

But...

Under The Bridge by RHCP uses a full blown C form for an Eb chord if I recall correctly.

Mary Jane's Last Dance uses a descenting line of CAGED fragments in the chorus:

A A A A

E----------------

B--2---5---10---14------

G--2---6---9----14-----

D--2---7---11---14-------

A--0---0---0----0--------

E--------------------

You get the idea real quick that it's the fragments of CAGED that get used a TON more than the full chord.

All your basic Minor Pentatonic licks are based commonly based in the G form and the C form. Like in A Min Pent where you have your Root on the low E string at the 5th fret (this is the G form) and the pattern with the Root on the A string at the 12th fret (this is the C form).

Now, when you mix the A Min Pent and A Major Pent over each other at the 5th fret you are switching between a G form (the A Min Pent) and the E form (the A Major Pent).

So in that case, something like Johnny B Goode uses the G and E forms from the 5th fret since he doesn't always stay in one scale :) That Chuck was a crafty guy :)

It's not unlike saying "give me a compendium of licksiffs based on Western Diatonic Harmony welve notes in an octave."

If you don't get what Mike is trying to tell you, then your head is trapped in a mental box. You want to see your instrument and the music you play from as many different perspectives as you can, not just CAGED.

Yea genius, I know that. Right now I'm trying to see the music from the CAGED perspective. Get it?

Thanks Mike, that helps.

I know that all licks have a basis in CAGED which is why I was looking for a compendium of licks that REFERENCE CAGED. That is, C-Form licks, A-Form licks, etc.

Mike's right.

What you need to do, if you're using the CAGED system to organize your fretboard thinking, is to take every lick you know or learn and figure out for yourself what 'form' it is derived from.

Hint: Figure out the chord that the lick is being played over, then find that chord in the same spot on the neck as the lick.

Yea genius...

By the way, being an ass to people trying to help you isn't conducive to make others want to help.

I didn't get the sense that Darrell was being helpful. He was saying my head was in a mental box if I didn't understand what Michael said, when Michael himself began answering my question once I clarified.

What he said was that IF YOU DIDN'T UNDERSATND WHAT MIKE WAS SAYING, you are (apparently) in a closed-minded headspace. It was not an insult, it was an observation.

Could it have been said more politely?? Maybe... But I don't think it warranted another derogatory remark and the beginning of a blood feud.

Lord knows I try to avoid them (I only had one in my experience on here, with a guy that wasa total douche to EVERYONE...)

Let's try to be civil.

Alot of classic rock solos typically use the "pentatonic" box patterns which really highlight the CAGED forms.

The intro lick to stairway to heaven starts out with the "G" form of the A minor pentatonic box, then moves briefly to the E form, Then back to the G form. There's a ton of other examples.

|----5---------------------|----8-8-8b--8p5------8-10p8--------------|

|------8-5-----------------|-8b-------------8/10--------10-8----8h10-|

|-5--------------------------|

|---8-5----------------------|

|-------7-5---7-5------------|

|-----------7-----7-5-7-5----|

|-------------------------8v-|

|----------------------------|

Another example would be Ozzy's "No more tears" with an ascending pentatonic lick that highlights the G form of the D minor pentatonic scale, then to the E form, then to the D form and the end.

hendrix used it a lot - little wing, wind cries mary and bold as love are good examples...

It was actually listening to Hendrix rhythm melodies that got me wondering if anyone put them into a CAGED frame.
