Members Stringhead Posted February 27, 2010 Members Posted February 27, 2010 Is there a way to play a Ukulele with guitar chord fingering. It seems obvious to tune the strings DGBE then play like a guitar. Is it that simple or am I missing something?
Poparad Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 There are four types of ukes: soprano, tenor, concert, and baritone. A Baritone uke is just the top four strings of a guitar, tuned DGBE. The other three are tuned the same as each other, but have different body sizes. These three are tuned like the baritone, but a fourth higher to GCEA. Usually the fourth string, G, is an octave higher, so it's actually higher than the 2nd and 3rd strings. Despite the octave difference, the notes are still basically the top four strings of a guitar a fourth higher. Because of this, whether playing a baritone or the other three, you can just play the top four strings of any guitar chord voicing and you'll have a uke voicing. Just be sure to remember to transpose the chord if it's not a baritone uke (i.e., a C chord will become an F chord, a G chord will be a C chord, and so on).
Members TrickyBoy Posted February 27, 2010 Members Posted February 27, 2010 I may be completely mistaken and I have no Uke experience, but I always thought you tuned a Uke to "My dog has fleas" - the second string was the lowest. What do I know. Wait - you said this already.
