Members TrickyBoy Posted March 7, 2010 Members Posted March 7, 2010 OK, so I followed a bunch of the advise I got and rerecorded the minor ballad thingy. Here's what I changed: 1. Played it acoustically2. Slowed it down (ala Danny's advice)3. Finger picked it (ala Jasco, however, I ain't giving them up for good)4. Tried to play to the song rather than shoehorning my crap into it Here's the result: http://www.box.net/shared/pocbmb57vx Be gentle.

It's tough to play with the attitude expressed in your #4 above, but it's almost always better if you do, for a variety of reasons.
Members meganutt7 Posted March 7, 2010 Members Posted March 7, 2010 I think it is a much better take... less stock sounding stuff... You sound like your crafting melodies... Thinking in the moment and reacting, rather than, as you put it, shoehorning your own old crap in there.... I think the best way to practice is through limitation exercises.. try to play the same tune but only on ONE STRING... and try to KEEP IT MUSICAL AND INTERESTING on one string.... Or only in a four fret area (say, 5th to 8th fret, NO CHEATING)... These types of exercises really make you learn how to milk the most out of a limited situation....
Members mosiddiqi Posted March 7, 2010 Members Posted March 7, 2010 I dug that Jason!..much better..it all sounded much more considered and melodic to me. Good job!. I'll be posting up another BT soon..kind of an Ozzy "Goodbye to Romance" type of thing ...put together by the ridiculously talented Micwalt...he doesn't post in the LL..but is often in GJ or Mark's place..absolutely one of the most talented guys I've heard here..sings great, plays great..I HATE him
Members TrickyBoy Posted March 7, 2010 Author Members Posted March 7, 2010 Thanks guys, Danny, The limitation thing is why I chose to play without a pick. Forced me to think about the melody more. The one string exercise definitely sounds like a neat one. Mo, That new BT sounds like fun!! Can't wait. Jasco, I think I'm going to goof with this no pick thing some more. I have no classical training whatsoever, so I'm probably doing everything technically wrong. But it does force me to look at the guitar in a new way, which is fun.
Members jeremy_green Posted March 7, 2010 Members Posted March 7, 2010 Quite a bit nicer Jason. Good work and nice taking it out of the box. If you just simply keep recording yourself playing with these BT's that alone will help your start REALLY hearing yourself. Apply all the great insights and ideas you are getting here and you will be out of your rut in no time man!
Members GreenAsJade Posted March 7, 2010 Members Posted March 7, 2010 Wow - that was really nice! Now I want to hear Mo's acoustic fingerpicking version ... that's what you're working on, right, Mo? GaJ
Members TrickyBoy Posted March 8, 2010 Author Members Posted March 8, 2010 Thanks guys for taking the time to listen. I feel like I'm starting to learn how to ride a bike again. It's funny how playing other peoples stuff and trying to come up with stuff on your own are such different skills. But little by little, I'm getting there.
