Members Markle Posted March 12, 2010 Members Posted March 12, 2010 Hey, I have been playing guitar for around a year and a half now and from watching videos of some of my guitar idols I notice that most of them hold the pick with the side of their index finger and their thumb. I was always shown to hold a pick with the pad of my thumb and the pad of my index finger and over the last week or so I have started to doubt if im holding it right.Iv tried to change the way I hold the pick to match the likes of Paul Gilbert but it doesn't feel natural, so my question is should I continue trying to hold it the way Paul Gilbert holds it or should i hold it the way I always have? Heres a video of Paul explaining the way he holds it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YvsOKTPaks He starts explaining at around the 55 second mark Iv also noticed that he uses he wrist alot with the way he holds it, i tend to just use my fingers Regards, Mark

Members jeremy_green Posted March 12, 2010 Members Posted March 12, 2010 I do it the way Paul does.... but I have seen many fast awesome players play with very odd technique. I would say maybe try out the new position and it you take to it great. If you never get comfortable with it go with what works. It is a very personal thing.
Members Alex_DeLarge Posted March 12, 2010 Members Posted March 12, 2010 I also grab the pick the way that Paul does, but I angle the pick to the other side (upwards). For what I've seen in various videos, wrist is more likely to be used than fingers. There's a picking style called sarod picking that uses the fingers a lot, more than the wrist.
