Members EFG#ABCD Posted March 17, 2010 Members Posted March 17, 2010 I need to sharpen my melodic dictation skills ASAP. Im doing quite well with intervals, scale and triad/7th chord recognition using the trainers at www.musictheory.net .... but i'm sucking badly at melodic dictation, even simple lines are screwing with me. 2 part dictation totally leaves me for dead My only solution is to download a buttload of midi files, import them into Guitar Pro (with the entire staff/tab hidden) play them and attempt to notate the vocal or lead instrument, and check my answers by revealing the notation. I could think of worse ways than the above, but I'm certain someone here knows a better, more effective way?
Members Virgman Posted March 17, 2010 Members Posted March 17, 2010 What is melodic dictation? Never heard of it. Are you talking about transcribing?
Members 1001gear Posted March 17, 2010 Members Posted March 17, 2010 Single line as opposed to multiple part harmony.
Members mcmurray Posted March 17, 2010 Members Posted March 17, 2010 Forget about interval training. Functional pitch recognition is what you need to work on; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ear_training#Functional_pitch_recognition Listen and learn how scale degrees sound within a major or minor key.
