Members Virgman Posted April 2, 2010 Members Posted April 2, 2010 One of the greats of jazz guitar. RIP Herb. A young Herb Ellis picture. He was young once too. These guys were not always old as we have grown to know them. They had their time in flower. Article and video: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postmortem/2010/03/jazz-guitarist-herb-ellis-dies.html?hpid=news-col-blog Man, that is a bummer... I loved Herb Ellis... Him, Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Les Paul, Wes, JImmy Raney, Tal Farlow... That whole crew was the backbone of the technically adept jazz guitarist nowadays..... He had a great style and provided many people with insight, enjoyment and stimulation.... I am saddened by his passing..
Members stomias Posted April 2, 2010 Members Posted April 2, 2010 Saw Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel in the '70's at Milt Trenier's Lounge on Lake Shore Dr. A real lesson in tasteful guitar playing. Two guys with amazing chops and a sublime sense of humor. I also remember the group I was with couldn't cover our bar bill!!!!!!! Oh...... to be young and stupid again.
Members 3shiftgtr Posted April 2, 2010 Members Posted April 2, 2010 I saw Herb and Tal Farlow do a thing at a Gibson event at NAMM related shindig. Herb's first two songs were duets with some young guy who overplayed...after Speedy McNotey's solo and at the beginning of his, Herb looked at the audience and for about 2 beats, strolled and made a funny face and pantomimed running up and down the fret board. The crowd cracked up, as did McNotey. Who appropriately calmed down. And of course, his duets with Farlow was just sublime. And the other two afterthoughts that followed Tal and Herb, were Chet Atkins, then Phil Keaggy. RIP, Herb Also saw him with a quartet in the late 80's at the Rockford Jazz festival. He was just fantastic.
