Members gennation Posted May 25, 2010 Members Posted May 25, 2010 This is my transcription Tal Farlow's first solo for the song Night & Day from the Red Norvo album named Night and Day, it can also be found on the more readily available "The Modern Red Norvo" album. NOTE Tal plays a two measure pickup into the solo he plays over the verse. The notation represents this by playing over two measures on Ebmaj7 before heading the Bmaj7 chord. In the video though, I improv over the turnaround, preceding Tals solo by 6 measures. So, the video starts with the turnaround leading up to Tal's wonderful solo starting two measures before the verse. (I also improv'ed past Tal's portion of the solo, sorry couldn't help it!) Disclaimer: From critical listening to this solo, it sounds like there are one or more splices in it. I've taken the solo and played it through as one continuous piece instead of separate pieces. The song and solo: This song is in the Key of Eb Major, and you'll see the progression is a bit different than the Realbook version, but much cooler. And the differences are that the original, and the commonly played progression when working with vocalists, is not what's in the Realbook. The progression is for the verse and turnaround is... ||: Bmaj7 | Bb7 | Ebmaj7 | Ebmaj7 :|| Am7b5 | Abm7 | Gm7 | F#dim7 | Fm7 | Bb7 | Ebmaj7 | Ebmaj7 || then repeat the whole thing. There is a bridge to the song but Tal isn't playing over it in this section of his solo. But, the Realobook has that part correct. And remember!!!! I start 6 measure before Tal's solo starts. Here's a clip of Tal's original performance: http://test.mikedodge.com/mvdmusic/MikeD/TalFarlowOriginalClip.mp3 Video Example: Here's the video of me playing it a little slower than Tal for you so you can see how it's played, it ain't easy even at a slow pace: efQ1tsQ3ndY The Transcription (I've also provided the PDF to download for better viewing): Hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

I have a vid of his by one of the guitar lesson companies (maybe Hot Licks) but it's more of talking and him playing than him showing anything specific. But he meets up with Lenny Breau, talks about his sing painting, and how guitar is second to the sign painting. I've learned quite a bit of his stuff in bits and pieces but this the only one I took the time to write out formally. Another tune that fun is the Red Norvo version of God Child, I think that's my favorite Tal stuff. Something about him playing over those changes. Maybe I'll transcribe the head to that tune, it's fun to play on guitar for sure.
Members gennation Posted May 26, 2010 Author Members Posted May 26, 2010 That's neat Mike.I enjoyed it. Try some of it Virg. At least try the last four measures, it's a killer IIm-V7alt-I line in Eb. Check out the Abmaj7 arp over Fm7 (CLASSIC jazz line, I've talked about this many times here), then the chromatic line on his way to the V7, and then the altered line over the Bb7, and a Major Pentatonic line to finish it!
Members gennation Posted May 26, 2010 Author Members Posted May 26, 2010 Thanks. That's one of my favorite tunes and to have Tal playing it is even cooler. There's some serious stuff going on in that solo. I've never tried to analyze it really...I was too busy trying to get it down. It's amazing how much music can be packed in 40 seconds of music!

This is one of my favorite performances of it: kx9UXTe5D8A Sylvain really burns on this one!
Members Virgman Posted May 26, 2010 Members Posted May 26, 2010 Try some of it Virg. Someone said that to me once with a joint in their hand. I have too much going on at the moment and don't want to get off track. I've learned I can't do everything if I want to be half-assed.
Members akapuli Posted May 26, 2010 Members Posted May 26, 2010 I'll try when I get home. I don't really understand this recent hate against you. Just ignore them :-D

Members gennation Posted May 29, 2010 Author Members Posted May 29, 2010 Thanks for this man! Your an awesome player! Im having a lot of fun learning this. Thanks a lot:thu: Straight up, man. No problem, good luck with it. I find that bVImaj7->V7->Imaj7 to be way more hipper than the Realbook version. Just playing over that as a vamp opens up some really hip sounds. Plus, all the versions I've heard except about 2 use that progression and not what;s in the Realbook. It's like the Realbook dumb'ed it down to a II-V-I thing. Let me know how it goes, it's a CRAZY solo!!!!
Members Virgman Posted May 29, 2010 Members Posted May 29, 2010 Tal Farlow was awesome. (If you think Farlow was awesome then you are over the hill.)
