Haven't done one of these in ages..thought it might be fun. This is only about a minute long, and is good practice for your mixolydian licks.

Here's the BT:

..and here's my rather sloppy take done last night to get us going...I kept it as I like some of it. Don't be shy!.. I always learn things from all the takes we get in these jam threads. Critiques welcome!..that's how we get better. :)

I had a try just now, which was fun. A good thing for beginners about this track is that it is _great_ for learning the notes on the fretboard. Since every note you're going to be playing (if you follow Mo's advice of G mixo) is going to be a natural note, you darn well should be able to call them as you play them.

Unfortunately, all I came up with was noodling, so I've put it aside for a while. I didn't listen to yours yet Mo...

Thanks Jeff! :)

I use a Pod XT straight into the "Line in" on my PC..and I use Reaper recording software which is "free" *cough*

Any kind of line level device to connect your guitar to your PC will do..if your amp has a "headphone out" or "Line out" that'll do the job too.

Awesome as usual.

Mo I love your second half of this take. It sounds like you just start relaxing into the groove and your playing came alive... then it ends : (

The first part is cool but it seems a hair unsettled to me... you sound a little bit tentative. I am being SUPER picky dude because it sounds pretty damn great all said.

That is part of the problem with Backing Track jams (especially short ones). There is a pressure to get right to it, so they are a little unnatural. In a normal playing situation you have had 2/3 of the song to get into the groove.

Great job man! I will see if I can make time to do a take. These are always fun.

Thank you Jeremy!..yes, listening back I'd agree that I sound a bit tentative on the first part...I heard each phrase about a half second too late!..which always makes me tense up in the execution. I don't have much patience with takes and was just trying to get something out quickly. About halfway..I started hearing it properly, giving myself time to actually play...which is a great lesson learned right there in fact. I might give it another go later on. Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated!

Not much participation here, I'll have a crack at it tonight. These jams are the only chance I get to have honest-ish (you guys are usually too kind) critiques of my playing.

Jeff, i've got an imac and my recording will be straight from my strat to the line-in on my computer and recorded in garageband. I highly recommend buying a mac if you can afford it.

Dang, you guys make me so jealous ... I wanna be able to do that!!!

I reckon the same feedback you gave Mo applies to this one too, hope you don't mind me saying.

You hit your stride coming to the bridge. I loved the opening lick too, but then the phrases after that sounded like they were looking for what to say rather than saying something.

My own initial efforts were like that (minus the excellent opening lick, and at half the rate of notes ). It seems really hard to find something to say over this laid back chord progression...

No of course never mind you saying man!

I always feel it takes a bit to settle into the groove before it starts relaxing. In a normal soloing situation with a band there is a natural buildup that gets you mentally ready and into the song by the time the solo section hits. There is also a natural interaction that takes place with the other players that is missing as well. It always feels a bit clinical to me. But I should be able to hang with it so it's good practice and why i try to always participate in these.

Stuff like this gives you a real appreciation for how great the session players like Steve Lukather are at just sitting in there and peeling out.

I really need to figure out a way to record better. The freaking latency on this Reaper software is killing me. Plus I have a Zoom effect pedal from 1993 which sucks. And I've been drinking for a few hours, which isn't helping. Regardless, here's my half-assed take.

Now I'll go listen to Mo and Jeremy's takes, which I'm sure make me look like a jamook.

Enjoy :thu:

EDIT: Oh and there's like 7 seconds of silence at the beginning. Sorry

Yeah, you and Mo kept it more major sounding (hence the mixolydian title) To me it sounded like a blues track, so that's how I approached it (then again, that's how I approach everything ). Your take has a few lines that I really like.

These are fun though. I need to take a few hours and figure out the recording part... :D

Jeremy Take 1: Love the opening lick and the screaming blues lick at the break...very cool overall. Sort of like the same thing I had in mind for my take.

Jeremy Take 2: ..killed!..chock full of cool lines (which I'm stealing, but I've told you I'm stealing them, so that's ok right? ;)) the ascending thing in the middle is tasty!..love the phrasing too.

Jason: Bluesman!..I really like the second half in particular where you've settled in (this is becoming a theme )..well in the groove and nice and dirty sounding. :)

Oh, Jason, download the ASIO4ALL drivers (free)...that'll sort out your latency problems with Reaper. Worked a treat for me!.

I'm gonna try to put my own version up within a week or two. Meanwhile, I've been messing around a little with putting together jam tracks of my own. Here's one I did a couple weeks ago. If you guys like it, post away! would love to hear them! Thanks! -Jon

That's a cool BT Jon!..I'll have a go in the next day or so..

and thanks for the comments all!
