Members gennation Posted November 19, 2010 Members Posted November 19, 2010 A vamp is just something that repeats and repeats. It's commonly referenced as a chord or chord progression that continuously cycles. it could look like this: ||: Am7 :|| or like this ||: Am7 | D7 :|| or ||: Cmaj7 | Am7 | Dm7 | G7 :|| Someone or something will signal when the vamp is over and it's time to move ahead in the song. Or, the song might be JUST a vamp. Regardless, it's an cycle with no defined end until it's time to end.
Members meganutt7 Posted November 19, 2010 Members Posted November 19, 2010 A vamp is a repeated musical idea that repeats (USUALLY) verbatim... This can be as simple as just having a progression that repeats, but more often than not, the vamp will have a specific rhythmic identity, or "kicks", as they are sometimes called... This is particularly good (and well utilized) when a drummer wants to solo over a groove of some sort, rather than just freestyling... It's a really good thing to do to keep the audience engaged as the drummer goes nuts... The rest of the band are hitting this repeated vamp with specific rhythmic hits, really giving a sense of where the beat/groove is.... Also, you may VAMP on a progresion to end a song or start one, for instance... Say you're playing "My favorite Things"... it SHOULD technically end on an Em of some sort (as it's in the key of Em), but you could then tag onto the ending of the tune a VAMP that might go: ||: Emaj7 | Emaj7 | F#m7 | B7b9 :|| Then you could also add kicks to it, indicating that the chords (or more specific notes) are to be hit on certain parts of certain beats, by putting little rhythm slashes over the top of the bars.... Then, after you vamp for say 8 times around the form, you cna have a tag ending, like a Cma7#11 into an Emaj7#11 to end, for instance..... These are not the only two ways in which vamps are used, but I would wager to say they are probably the most common... Jeremy pointed you to a great, practical and in depth definition of the term "vamp"... Figured I would just add my two cents...

Seemed kind of cold ... but it was hard to beat wikipedia! yeah, bro.. agreed.. On a side note... I got my ZT Club amp this week and played a gig with it.. People laughed at me brining this tiny looking toy amp into a loud gig.. I put it on like 3 or 4 and the owner came up to me and asked me to turn it down... Everyone was shocked at the tone this thing was putting out... it was actually pretty amazing. Power purchase, for sure!!!! Now I just want a couple of other things for my gear acquisition syndrome.... Have you checked out Wampler pedals yet??? I want a Pinnacle II pretty badly now... It's Van Halen in a box... I checked out a couple reviews and it is exactly what I've been looking for. Now I just need someone to by my old twin reverb. That thing is just too freaking heavy to lug anywhere.
